The One Cancelled After Four Episodes

Friday July 28, 2006
It turns out ABC won't be making a music star, after all. The network has cancelled its embarrasing reality tv flop The One: Making A Music Star after only four episodes. Variety reports that the show's premiere on July 18th made history as the lowest-rated adults 18-49 debut for a reality show in modern TV history. Ouch! Ratings did not improve after that.

So, what went wrong? There are few things I can think of that may have contributed to the The One's quick demise.

The ads that aired before the show's debut did little to entice viewers to watch. There were lines like "It's the show Fox doesn't want you to see." Puhleeze. Instead of that stupid line, they could have mentioned that there was a pretty juicy twist that would have the contestants voting each other off the show.

ABC should have also introduced us to the contestants before the show aired. The audition rounds were not a part of the show, so a simple move like releasing bios and photos to the press a few weeks earlier would have been a great way to get people excited about the contestants.

And here's what I think about the show itself. Having cameras filming the contestants behind the scenes could have been great. But I was a little disturbed by the whole thing while watching Tuesday night's episode. There was Aubrey, a singer who was having a relationship with one of the other contestants. Before their performances, ABC thought it would be fun to show footage of the guy telling Aubrey that his ex-girlfriend is pregnant. She responds by smashing her guitar to pieces. Then we were supposed to focus on the performances?

The One had potential, but apparently it wasn't...well, the one. There is no word yet on if or how a winner will be chosen.

Like a bad sports team. No talent means no wins means no fans. Timing had nothing to do with it. Terrible excuses for singers. Everyone of them is the reason there are day jobs.

I’ve caught parts of the show, and thought it was great. BUT… you can’t schedule it opposite more popular reality shows and expect to get viewers!

man! i was really watching for that show. i liked the journey and i think those kids are getting cheated since one is supposed to win~ i hope somehow, one does end up with a recording contract. it is only fair…it may not have been American Idol, but it was THEIR dream and THEIR chance!

I liked it. I thought a few were good preformers. I wish they would have anounced that it was canceled, I wasn’t sure where it went. Now I know it whent off.

I turned on this show once and was extremely disappointed. It was like a bad school talent show. Not one person on that show I thought could sing or even come close to holding a note . . if that’s what they call talent I might as well have gone on the show.

A talent show should have talent. They all sucked!!! I am only shocked that it took 4 episodes to get it cancelled. I’m sure the judges are glad they decided to join this show. So much for any tv appearances by them again. I think it is very funny this happened to ABC since they passed on Idol twice!!! Watch out NBC here comes ABC.

My husband and I loved the show and felt there was plenty of talent there. The format was entertaining. Although the antics at the “house” were a little immature, we found the competition fun to watch. We have been watching for the next episode and are disappointed in discovering today the cancellation…and that we wont see a winner. Too bad for those kids, it must be very disappointing. Great exposure for those who are good though!
Oh well….guess it’s back to Supernova/Rock Star

Honeslty, I only watched the show to hear the beautiful voice that came out of Austin Carroll. Visually, he’s a bit confusing (his looks aren’t a match with his pipes), but I think this kid could become a successful recording star. I wish him well.

This was a ghastly show! It was incredibly boring. I really don’t want to see all of that backstage drivel. It just takes away from judging the talent, which quite frankly, I wasn’t impressed with AT ALL. I could barely get through the episode; it was just all over the place and said nothing. Yes, this show deserved to go home.

No talents with huge ego’s are fun to watch when being mocked, but trying to make them look like true performers was a joke. All attitude, no ability.
