Top Model's Brittany Answers Our Burning Questions

Friday May 4, 2007
America's Next Top Model's latest eliminated contestant Brittany talked to me about the hair extensions from hell, her problems with short term memory, her minor meltdown, and more. Here are some excerpts from the interview.

After your horrible experience with hair extensions on the show, will you ever wear extensions again?

Only if they're glued in! They had actually dyed my hair to match the color of the extensions but they had quite a bit of trouble doing that. After seven or eight times, my scalp was blistered and when they braided my hair up it was ripping the blisters off. I started to bleed and scab up and its just excruciatingly painful.

You were really emotional during your last two episodes. What triggered the outbursts?

With reality television, you are stuck in a little universe that they create. It's set up so that you are cut off from the rest of the world and you are made to feel like America's Next Top Model is the only world that exists. You are put in high stress situations and you feel like every failure is the biggest failure and if you failed there will never be anything else . It starts to wear on you as a person and who you are. Eventually it does get to you and people handle it in different ways. Everyone has their little moments. They just don't choose to show everyone's little breaking moments…Then you get off of the show and you get back into the real world and you're like "Oh, wait! There's a world outside of the cameras and microphones!

Some of the girls were implying that you really don't have memory problems. What's your response to that?

That was a completely ignorant statement from somebody who knows absolutely nothing about what they are talking about. Short term and long term memory are two totally different things. When we had the acting challenge, we had two hours to memorize a script and that's long term memory. Short term memory is something that exists from two to five seconds. You look at something and you read it and you regurgitate it and then you have no reason to remember it again. And with the cue cards, that's exactly what you do. It's short term memory…And I couldn't do that because as soon as I looked at it and looked back at the camera, I had no idea what it had said...

Who are you rooting for to win the competition?

I want Renee or Natasha to win. I think they're both fantastic people with a lot of potential in a lot of areas. I think they'll both do incredibly well in the competition and in the modeling industry.
