Why Joey Fatone Shouldn't Win Dancing With The Stars

Tuesday May 15, 2007
I love watching Joey Fatone perform on Dancing With the Stars. He's amazing! But doesn't that have a lot to do with the fact that he danced for years with the boy band *NSYNC? I know. I know. *NSYNC's hip-hop flavored choreography had nothing to do with ballroom dancing. But isn't Joey's impressive dance background just a little bit unfair when we consider that the other finalists have no dance experience at all?

Joey was in the bottom two last week, so I may not have to ponder that question for too much longer. But the crowd pleaser may survive tonight's elimination and go on to win the whole thing, following in the footsteps of another boy band star -- season two winner Drew Lachey.

Either way, I am loving the final four this year. After last night's performance show, I'm convinced that they're the most talented celebrity dancers to compete on the show so far!

I agree with you…last night’s show was fantastic. I sort of agree with you about Joey, but then again Laila and Apollo are seasoned athletes, very much in shape. I personally would love to see Ian win, just because he has struggled through the whole season and really showed improvement last night. A win for him would be far more exciting than watching other “professionals” win. They are all good, though, and tonight is going to be a tear-jerker, no matter who gets eliminated!

I so would like Apollo win - this couple (the youngest) have totally out done themselves. I don’t think being atheletes really helps you know how to dance. I would love to be able to slap Len for his nasty comments throughout the program.

I think that was the best show of all seasons. Their talents and hard work paid off for sure. It’s a shame Apollo didn’t get the 60 he so craved, they surely deserved it. Think the best final would be Joey vs Apollo, but hey they all are good and deserving. Will be very interesting to see who goes home
since I fell asleep before getting through to vote

Apollo and Julianne are the best! I think they show the most “heart” and skill of all of them.

I agree with the Apollo fans. I think he outdanced the others by a large margin. I will be very surprised and disappointed if he does not win 1st place.

(6) IronBar says:

Obviously you’ve never danced ballroom dance, or you wouldn’t made those ill-informed comments about Joey not deserving to win on Dancing With The Stars.

Ballroom requires a helluva lot more choreography than the simplistic moves he would have performed while with N-Sync.

As for Apollo and Julianne, they disappointed the hell out of me last night. Their first dance was incredible, and then they loused it up with their dance to Salt-n-Pepa’s “Push it”.

I usually think is a dusty old fart when it comes to his comments about the dances, but last night he was spot-on about Apollo & Julianne’s dance- it WAS raunchy. I think the technical execution of the dance was flawless, but that dance was supposed be SEXY, not sleazy! They looked like a couple of horny teenagers at an under-21 club.

As for Leila Ali, the judges were too generous with her last night. Again, flawless execution of the steps, but the energy just wasn’t there. She looked lackluster in both dances.

Ian and Cheryl- they’re my sentimental favorites. I really hope that Ian can kick it up a notch, but I’m not expecting him to make it in the results show tonight.

Latoya West, here.

Just wanted to respond to Clare and Ironbar.

Even though I think he has an advantage over the others, I recognize that he has put a great deal of work into this competition — former dancer or not. I think his background is the one reason he shouldn’t win (and that’s because I’m always rooting for underdogs). Based on everything else, he should be in the finals!

And Clare…Great point that he danced with *NSYNC so long ago. Time really flies!

Season 1 Kelly Monaco
Season 2 Drew Lachey
Season 3 Emmitt Smith
Season 4 By all respects should be: Apolo Anton Ohno & Julianne Hough.
Joey is too experienced, very good in fact, but should leave way for the most improved, with no dance experience, Apolo to win. Laila, is good, but laid back and not the wow factor necessary to win, however, it they’re going to go with the judges, and if you look at past winners, it’s a female that will take it this season. In fact, this would be so unfair.

(11) Kay-T says:

Talk about unfair? How about Malinda Dolittle on American Idol? She is already a professional back-up singer. She is in the final 3 and should NOT win. (Besides…she sucks). It should be those without professional experience only. Jordan or Blake should win. As for Joey, the dancing (if it can really be called that is nothing even close to the type of dancing he is doing now. However, singing is singing.

I personally think Joey is a bit cocky. In last week’s episode, the made fun of Ian being too tense on the dance floor and how he’s “confident” and not “cocky”. Personally, I think that’s a problem when you have to state that aloud. Probably he was in the bottom 2 last week because the audience started to get sick of his excessive cockiness. After last week’s result show, Joey sure tuned down on his cockiness….otherwise, i’m pretty sure everyone else in America would not vote for him.

(13) Angel says:

I had to put my two cents in here. Not that it’s worth much… but here it is. Mario Lopez was one of the greatest dancers I’ve ever seen…. until this year with Joey Fatone. I think any one of the people who have made it to the finals is worthy of the win. If you’ve never been a dancer, you should probably keep an opinion to yourself because you have no clue the work that goes into it. My favorite thing about this particular season of Dancing With the Stars is I feel that these people all genuinely care about the other. There seems to be no animosity with the stars or the dancers. They seem to genuinely like one another which was proven when Ian jumped on Joey and wrapped his legs around him in a hug over his first perfect 30 which was well deserved. Joey is a feel good dancer. So he danced with NSync years ago. Woopie… it’s not the same as ballroom dancing and I’m sure that Len would tell anyone that. I think it takes guts and courage no matter who you are to get out and allow yourself to be judged on your performance for all the world to see. And it takes an amazing amount of talent and bodily ability to be able to even remotely perform those dances. I am hopeful that Joey and Kym will win because I love their enthusiasm and upbeat personalities. I do not see him as cocky, I see him as funny and truly enjoying what he’s doing. If you complain that Joey was with NSync many years ago…. one could also argue that Apollo and Laila are currently involved in very agile, smooth, graceful boxing and ice-skating and the work-out that goes with such. My opinion isn’t worth much, but I feel that any one who dares to enter such a competition and truly put their ultimate effort in learning and performing deserves to win. I say Kudos to ALL of those who ever danced before… who dance now.. .and who will dance in the future. Rock on!!

(14) Olivia says:

Let us not forget Drew Lachey was also in a boy band 98 degrees??? you find there are alot of jealous people that want to pass unfair judgement on others because they want to find something to talk about around the water cooler each day.I personally think all of those that are left are amazing and each one of them deserve to win.its a very tough choice on who to vote on.

I think the judges have been way too hard on Ian and way to generous with Laila. Apollo is my favorite to win it.

Joey is too silly. Apolo is the best dancer. Laila is riding a lot on her father’s fame.

I totally disagree. Joey is in it for fun. Laila and Apollo are to cocky and automicall assume that they are going to win. Joey goes out there week after week and entertains better then any of the dancers and I am so rooting for him to win.

(19) No says:

Ugh. Whatever.

I hate when people fail to make the distinction between ballroom and “pop choreography.” THEY ARE WORLDS APART! You can as easily say that Apolo has an advantage because speed skating requires grace, endurance and speed. Seriously, you just can’t compare choreographed hopping around with ballroom dancing. To even say such a thing tells me that you have NO idea what you’re talking about. Do us all a favor and leave the judging to the professionals, would ya? While you might want a specific person to win, acting like you know everything (or, well, anything) about ballroom when you evidently don’t know squat just makes you look like a moron.

I know that apolo was probably the best technical dancer but joey provided the best overall package - he was just so exuberent! I’m thrilled to be seeing him on tour in AC and if you’re there aybe we can meet and compare notes!
