Dancing With the Stars Tension: Why Is Len Goodman Giving Mya Such a Hard Time?

Tuesday November 3, 2009

Mya is the most consistently strong competitor on Dancing With the Stars this season - and she is also the most consistently criticized by judge Len Goodman.

While Mya earned rave reviews from Carrie-Ann and Bruno last night, Len had to find something to pick on. "Too many gimmicks, too many unnecessary bits and lunges. I'm not interested in all that stuff," Len grumbled before giving Mya nd Dmitri a lousy score of seven. Carrie-Ann even remarked, "Len is officially smoking crack."  Last week, when Mya tackled the Jitterbug, Len complained, "What you did, you did well, I just wanted more." See what we mean? There's always something when it comes to Mya!

So, why do you think Len gives Mya such a hard time? Vote in the poll to tell me what you think!

You got to be kidding me: “because she has extensive dancing experience….” You mean to tell me, out of all the folk that have been on Dancing, and also possessed better than average dancing skills, this is all you can come up with??!! And she doesn’t even dance for a living–she sings!! I’m with you Lotoya, something’s not right! It’s almost strange–to the point of being highly SUSPECT!! (if you get my meaning!)

Mya’s background includes YEARS of dance training-including ballet, jazz and tap-she considers herself a dancer and choreographer. Yes she sings, but she is BEST known as an all around performer from Chicago (where she dances the TANGO), the video with Pink/Lil Kim/Christina?Mya for Moulin Rouge and other movies. Her dance experience includes a performance at the Kennedy Center under the tutelage of a nationally renowned teacher from Harlem in dance. No one, and I mean NOONE considers themself a choreographer unless they are at such a level of dance far and above the average. That is why the judges are holding her to a different standard of performance. If not, the entire contest is a joke, not only for the audience, but for Mya herself. How would anyone have pride in winning a contest against people who have NEVER danced before?

To Tanisha and Always dance,

Mya is not a professional dancer, her training has been in TAP! She herself has not called herself a choreographer, she has done choreography (hip hop/and tap) for her videos. Yes she did perform at the kennedy center and guess what she danced… TAP! She is NOT best known for her performance in Chicago, may be you don’t remember or it was after/before your time but she is BEST KNOWN for being a singer (in the 90’s). She herself put it best she said that she does not have training in any other form of dance, and that it would be like one of the PROFESSIONAL in DWTS trying to learn tap in ONE WEEK!!!!

So yes I 100% agree with you Latoya there is always something wrong according to Len the grump, and I agree with you K-K and I know what you mean.

So to anyone esle it would be much more simple if you just said you do not like Mya b/c these excuses are just that excuses! Aaron, Donny, Joanna (ballet experience) and other past participants have had dance experience to some extent… and NO ONE has said a thing!

I don’t think his being hard on Mya is a reflection on Mya herself or his feelings/opinion towards her. While Mya is imo the strongest dancer, she isn’t paired up with the strongest chereographer. Len’s comments are a reflect of Dmitri’s performance as Mya’s instructor and chereographer on DWTS. In a way I agree with Len, as much as I love Mya and want her to win, Derek is a better chereographer and produces better dances than Dmitri.

Len is just down right nasty with Mya and Dimitri. Maybe he doesn’t like Dimitri and taking it out on Mya. But, he never finds anything positive to say about their performance. In my opinion they have give almost flawless performances every time. They are the most beautiful dancers together. Mya is absolutley gorgeous and Dimitri is super fine!!!! But, the dancing is incredible with these two. No matter what they do they will continue to get low marks from Len. And the fact that she is a singer has nothing to do with it. Donny who I like is so stiff he is painful to watch. He is a singer too, but Len says more positive things to him than negative. The same applies with Kelly. Although Kelly is not and never will be in the top.

Wow! Okay, Mya dances really good. However, here is the key thing to note about DWTS…the show is based around people who have little or no ballroom dance training or little formal dance training. Therefore, people like Mya and Melissa from last season, who have ballet and tap and other dance training..and who have been consistently dancing, have an advantage over those who come in with no training. My has done a lot fo choreography and dance ont he stage…therefore, it is unfair to the other dances. I think that is why Len is hard on her because he already knows how good she is and she needs to be even better. She also has a slight arrogant attitude about herself. I have noticed in clips and snippents on TV behind the scene that she is very short with her fellow contestants and has said several times “I have to practice” or “I don’t have time to chat right now.” She is singling herself out from the others and I think she thinks everyone else is inferior to her. I think Len is sensing the attitude….don’t get me wrong, Mya is very good and deserves to win, but she probably won’t because she started out great and hasn’t stepped it up. Oh, as far as Donny is concerend…stiff? Maybe once or twice, but definitely smooth and fun most of the time. Painful for you to watch because you want Mya to win. Donny is doing the best he can for 51 and probably the first contestant to make it this far at this age…and…he really has a lot of energy and committment and is actually pretty good…
