The American Idol results show is usually a fairly dull hour, drawn out minute by minute with questionable group numbers, sponsor ads, and horrible attempts by Ryan Seacrest to create some sort of pseudo drama. This week's results show had all of that, but it also packed some pretty good stuff into the usual shtick.A guest appearance by Stevie Wonder was fun, and his singing Happy Birthday to Steven Tyler was a nice touch. Seeing Hulk Hogan show up was a bit odd but it got infinitely better with the exchange he had with Seacrest. Jennifer Hudson sounded (and looked) great too. But the best part? The ending was actually as surprising as it was touted to be.
The bottom three consisted of Thia, Stefano, and Casey. Casey Abrams is a fan favorite, so no one really thought he'd be the one with the fewest viewer votes ... except that he was. Just as he began his "sing for your life" song, Randy Jackson cut him off and declared him safe. Wow. No one was as shocked as Casey himself, who looked alternately full of joy and sick to his stomach. Jennifer Lopez explained that he needs to tone things down a little (indeed), but he deserves to be there.
Next week two people will be sent home after performing hits from the 1980s. (And next week's results show will feature performances by Fantasia and a duet by will.i.am and Jamie Foxx.) Since this was the cutoff for the Idols Live tour though, the entire top 11 will be touring together. Nice touch.
Did the judges make the right call in using their one and only save so early?
