Two new reality shows, BuckWild and The Sisterhood are still weeks away from premiering but they've already started stirring up controversy.
The Sisterhood is a new TLC show that follows the lives of five Atlanta women who are married to ministers. But these aren't your grandma's preachers' wives and their openness about sex, drugs and the accumulation of finer things has some Christians up in arms.
While some, like Apprising Ministries want to clarify that these preachers reflect a relatively small (if growing) branch of evangelicalism known as prosperity theology, I'd point out that, with names like "Phenomenal Life Church, Inc." some of these churches sound more like businesses then places of worship.
Meanwhile West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin III is petitioning MTV to pull BuckWild, a Jersey Shore like show set in the Appalachian Mountains. Calling it a "travesty," Manchin accused MTV of perpetuating, "ugly, inaccurate stereotypes" about the demographic formerly pigeonholed as "hillbillies."
"The viewers must understand this is not reality, this is not real West Virginia," the Democrat told Today's Matt Lauer. "They come in here and coerce these students or these young people, they pay them money, promise them fame and fortune, they had four and five takes until they got it outrageous enough to show it. Now, that's not reality."
Executive Producer John Stevens defended BuckWild, telling Entertainment Weekly, "It's not like looking at a train wreck, that's not what it is. That's the part I'm really excited about. There is a certain coolness to it. It's different than a lot of the stuff that has been produced. I think it's going to get people talking and it might change people's perspectives. These kids are totally wild and carefree. It will be very refreshing to the MTV audience."
The Sisterhood launches January 1st 9PM Eastern on TLC, BuckWild premieres January 3rd on MTV.
