How Real Is Reality TV?

Monday January 30, 2006
Is the hated Omarosa a victim of reality TV editors? Maybe! According to a new Time Magazine article, reality TV isn't as real as we think it is. The magazine reports:
"Even savvy viewers who realize that their favorite reality shows are cast, contrived and edited to be dramatic may have no idea how brazen the fudging [on reality shows] can be. Quotes are manufactured, crushes and feuds constructed out of whole cloth, episodes planned in multiact "storyboards" before taping, scenes stitched together out of footage shot days apart."
A few producers talked to Time about how the truth can be "enhanced" on reality shows. Sounds like the James Frey defense! Read How Reality TV Fakes It.

  • It doesn't matter if editors "enhance" some of the situations on reality TV. It's entertainment!
  • Reality TV is supposed to be REAL. There should be no manipulation in the editing room.
  • I don't care either way. I just love watching reality TV.
