Celebrity Duets Premiere -- What You Missed

Wednesday August 30, 2006

I watched the first-ever episode of Fox's Celebrity Duets and I'm already hooked. The show is a cross between American Idol and Dancing With the Stars. If you didn't catch the season premiere, here's what you missed:

  • Fox's press releases only mentioned judge David Foster, but it turns out Marie Osmond and Little Richard are also judges on the show. Little Richard is what you would expect him to be. There were times when he made statements that made no sense at all. And when he did make comprehensible remarks, he said things like "It made my big toe shoot up in my boot!" Marie Osmond was Paula Abdulish, trying hard to be nice to everyone. Actually, she reminded me of Paula in more ways than one. "You are eye candy!" she gushed to Chris Jericho.

  • Speaking of Chris Jericho, the former wrestling star was voted off the show by the judges (viewers will start voting next week). I don't think Jericho was the worst performer of the night. In fact, I'm surprised that Cheech Marin wasn't the first contestant eliminated. Though Cheech's performances left me wondering why he was even on the show, his personality impressed the judges. And it seems that Chris -- who jumped around the stage like a fake rock star -- may have turned the judges off.

  • Even though the ladies in the audience knew they had no shot with Jai Rodriguez, they went absolutely crazy for the Queer Eye star. Jai has the best voice in the competition. That plus his sex appeal will keep him in the game when viewers are allowed to start voting next week.

  • Speaking of next week, I can't wait to find out which music pros will perform on the show's second episode. Producers must be paying some serious dough to get legends including Gladys Knight and Smokey Robinson on the show. Michael Bolton, Lee Ann Womack , James Ingram, Michelle Williams, and Peter Frampton also performed with the contestants this week.

  • Some of the contestants were so far out of their league when performing with the pros, it was embarrassing. Olympic gold medalist Carly Patterson would barely qualify for bronze with her first performance of the night -- a duet of "Somewhere Out There" with James Ingram. The teen stepped it up for her second duet with Le Ann Womack. And maybe that's because the country star gave her such supportive looks throughout the performance.

  • As for the other contestants, they were alright. They're not good enough to put out albums, but they're alright. Alfonso can definitely sing, Hal Sparks gives each performance 150%, Lucy Lawless can hold a tune (and the attention of all the guys in the room), and Lea Thompson's voice is wobbly but bearable.

  • As host of the show, Wayne Brady has a tough job on his hands. He has to find positive things to say about the contestants even when their performances flopped terribly. It seems this former star of the tv improv comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway? will have a lot of improvising to do on Celebrity Duets.

The next episode of Celebrity Duets airs Thursday night at 9 pm ET.

I’m hooked too! But I have to disagree about Cheech. I thought he was great, especially his duet with Randy Travis. One of the best parts of the show was the surprise announcement of each music legend the performers were paired with. That added excitement. And GLADYS KNIGHT is just so awesome. She was fantastic.
