Starting Over Won't Be Starting Over

Thursday September 14, 2006
I have been reading your emails about Starting Over -- and I have never received so much email about any show since I started writing about Reality TV! For the readers who wanted to know why Starting Over is not on your local schedule, the daytime reality series has been officially cancelled. Fans did try hard to save the show a few months ago, but unfortunately, their efforts were in vain.

On Starting Over, a group of women lived together while trying to improve their lives with the help of life coaches.

(2) Marie Campbell says:

I am completely disturbed about Starting over being canceled. I watched that show EVERY day and taped when I couldn’t. It wa sone of the best shows reality TV had. IT HELPED PEOPLE No one had to sit and watch people eat worms and other stuff that made people sick just watching. It was lifes problems being solved. It helped me many times and it probably helped a few others.I certaintly hope you will reconsider your decision and make a lot of people happy. It was one of the few show I watched on NBC. I know you got a bunch of negative comments, but you got positive ones and are still getting them.

(3) De'Laina Miller says:

I hate that they have cancelled my show Starting Over it gave me inspiration because of what those women were going through in their lives was real and some of the things were what I was dealing with in mine I really hope that some network will pick them back up rather than NBC or not please help bring them back on the air!

(7) monica says:

I have been waiting for this show to start. How could they cancel this after you see all the forums and connections made by this show. What I sham I will miss this show and dr stan and iyanla and rhonda dearly. Is there a website where we can still catch up on our favorite people?

(8) dyan says:

This program was not only good for the lay reader, but it was also an excellent tool for educational settings. It is unfortunate that “women’s” issues are taken so lightly because those issues effect everyone in their lives!
It confuses me how programs like Jerry Springer survive and this one is cancelled? Can anyone make sense of this?

(9) gladys c. says:

I am so sorry that this show has been cancelled. After retiring last year I enjoyed watching it every morning.

What will have to Niambi and others? What is Jill doing nowadays? We will be locked in the dark forever.

Just maybe someday another network will pick up the show.

Kudos out to the starting over staff, you were great.

(10) Nicole says:

I agree. The good shows get cancelled. It was the only daytime show I watch. All the garbage infomercials, soap operas and talk shows survive???? Go figure. Think I”ll just cancel my cable.

September 18, 2006 at 12:17 pm
(11) Shilonda says:

I’m really upset about starting over being cancelled; I also must add that the new line for weekday mornings is horrible. Starting over must come back because it helped alot of people with similar issues to the people on the show.

September 18, 2006 at 12:35 pm
(12) Vickie says:

Bring back Starting Over!!! I just got hooked on it and now it’s gone. I never missed an episode once I discovered it.

September 18, 2006 at 12:36 pm
(13) Rhonda says:

I am truly going to miss the show, it was insightful and inspirational. I hope it gets picked up by another network.

September 18, 2006 at 12:49 pm
(14) Christine Losey says:

I can’t believe Starting Over House isn’t on. This show I’m sure helped some people with their issues and how to go about seeking help or that they know now they may need some help. I have watched this show since it’s beginning I just can’t believe the network took off a good shows like this and put on something stupid. Please reconsider and put this show back where it belongs. My daughter is a professional in this feel and felt they gave good advise she was astonished that it was so good, We have so many of these other talk variety shows we don’t need another bring back the good shows such a STARTING OVER HOUSE

September 18, 2006 at 1:15 pm
(15) FEJ says:

I can NOT believe SO has been cancelled. I have watched Starting Over since the very first episode. I TIVO it as to not miss an episode. Every summer I wait patiently for the season premiere. I wondered why the website (www.startingovertv.com) kept redirecting me…SO helped me in a lot of ways. I observed some of my lesser qualities in some of the women and it made me aware and eager to change for the better(just ask my husband). I was patient this summer and now I’m disappointed that this helpful show has been cancelled…is there a virtual petition to try and get it back on the air.

September 18, 2006 at 1:22 pm
(16) Barb says:

I really was amazed at this show, I believe it should have been on in Prime Time. Let’s all work and get it back: write in, call your stations, claim it.

September 18, 2006 at 1:26 pm
(17) Trula says:

I am absolutely devastated that this show has been cancelled. I’ve watched it since the first season when “Rain” and the girls were on. I will sincerely miss it. I kept going thru my local tv guide and wondered if maybe the time or network had been changed. DAMN!!!!!!!!!

September 18, 2006 at 2:34 pm
(18) "Miss Ellie" (Tulsa, not Dallas!) says:

I followed Starting Over on three TV channels, each time it was moved from 2 am on one, to 12 noon on another (great time spot) back to 2 am on the last one. I wrote to them and never got a response as to where it was, but just discovered in my searching that it has been canceled. I’m so disappointed. It needs to be back on the air in a decent time slot (noon was wonderful!). Please do what you can to bring it back. Big loss. Will the same work with the ladies be continued but without the program? How sad we can’t watch in and see the progress! HELP!!!!!!

September 18, 2006 at 2:45 pm
(19) Ms. Jody says:

Bring back STARTING OVER, I love this show. A good program is hard to find on TV please keep this one.
KEEP STARTING OVER this show is worth it.

September 18, 2006 at 3:31 pm
(20) kathleen says:

I am totally blown away that SO is cancelled. It is truly one of the more Classier shows on during the day and actually during the whole week. It was intelligent and helpful, real people working on real problems. I know, until NBC picks it up again I and several of my colleagues and friends will not be watching anything on NBC. I think you really hurt yourselves by cancelling this modern and innovative program. but..thats the mentality of TV today I guess. Non thinkers shows win out every time!

September 18, 2006 at 3:32 pm
(21) Ruth says:

I am very dissappointed in the cancelling of the show. Just found out this morning and I am in denial. The only reality show that was any good! It figures! If anyone knows how to connect with the producers I would love to know, or other fans. Some of the women from last season and the previous season live in my city, so I hope to run into them, it might be a bit kooky but I really feel like these people are friends of mine. I could really identify with the humanity of the show and these women. What would Dr Stan say about that? I am sure that everyone from the show will be successful, but I will truly miss my experience with Starting Over.

September 18, 2006 at 3:39 pm
(22) Marion Leonard says:

I don’t know why it was cancelled. I miss it very much. I loved it. It brought out a lot of emotions that I was going thru and am still going thru. Don’t people understand that a lot of people relate to what was going on in the house. Is going on in peoples lives. And it helped the a lot. I loved when some of the ladies came back and we got a chance to see how they have progressed in life. Please bring it back they have some bad show on that are gross. Why did they have to take it off. I would love to be one of the woman on the show. But I can’t get away for that long because I live with my daughter and her 2 children. So I could not leave her because I take the children to school because she goes to work at 5:30 am. So I have to be there for my grandchildren. Please see what you can do to bring the show back. I loved it very much. Yours truly Marion

(23) Nancy Mulqueen says:

I am devastated that Starting Over has been canceled. I miss it very much. I looked forward to watching it every single day. I have been looking foward to the new season and was so disappointed to hear it was coming back. Bring back this show! It is the most intelligent, helpful and inspirational reality show on television. I hope NBC reconsiders and if not then I hope it is picked up by another station. SO can’t be gone forever.
Sincerely, Nancy

(24) Rhonda MacIsaac says:

I am devistated that Starting Over has been cancelled. I feel that all women and even some men can benefit from the things that were being taught by the Starting over coaches. It was not just the women on the series that this show was helping, I learned so much about myself and had long hard looks at some of my behaviors . I learned to stop blaming people for everything that went wrong in my life, took a good look in the mirror and took responsability for everything I did or didn’t do to get me where I was. All of a sudden these feelings of resentment I had for people in my life felt so silly. I followed the suit of many Starting Over ladies and just let it all go. My life is much more fun and I am more fun to be around. For that I would like to thank every one that helped keep the show going for as long as it did. I watched every day and would love to see it start up again. PLEASE DO SOMETHING!!!!
Regrettably SAD
R. MacIsaac (CAN)

(25) Penny says:

What the hec is NBC trying to prove. They have that crap Maury Povich on but not Starting Over. As women NBC insults the intelligence of women. I hope the forces are with us and they bring back the show for my sanity and yours. Maybe Latoya could post all of our comments for NBC to read.

September 18, 2006 at 7:23 pm
(26) Sue Cowell says:

“Starting Over” has been of invaluable help and comfort to me. I cannot tell you how much I will miss the good counsel of Illanya, Rhonda, Dr. Stan and the Housemates. I have been dealing with a very difficult situation at home, and SO kept me sane, I swear! I always told myself if things got too bad, I could always go to the SO house. I’ve talked to dozens of women about this show, and know the viewership is much larger than NBC thinks…many folks are “closet” viewers, but still watching those commercials and buying those products! And I actively DID support the sponsors, because SO was my lifeline, and I was grateful it was there! I hope some smart exec realizes this is a huge mistake and find a way to bring it back…with the same counselors, too. They were wonderful. Thanks to you all!

September 18, 2006 at 8:39 pm
(27) Tara says:

It seems to me that NBC didn’t do their homework before they canceled this show. There are so many viewers upset by this.

September 19, 2006 at 9:00 am
(28) Susan says:

WHAT HAVW YOU DONE? Let me guess, someone who never watched the show before pulled the switch. This show was what i looked forward to every day when nothing else mattered. The professionals on this show have helped a world of people beyond the women they coached in the house. What are you thinking? Please, please, please revisit this decision you’ve made. I will pray that another station is checking this out and realizes what a mistake NBC has made. I waited anxiously all summer for the new season and am totally devistated by your decision. I would get out of bed in the middle of the night just to watch Starting Over if that’s when it was on. Come on, please change your minds. There is plenty of garbage on TV that must not get even close to the number of viewers Starting Over had.

September 19, 2006 at 9:51 am
(29) Vicky says:

I CAN’T BELIEVE STARTING OVER HAS BEEN CANCELLED! I KEPT WATCHING TO SEE WHEN THE NEW ONES WERE STARTING AND TO MY SURPRISE, IT IS GONE! dAYTIME TV IS FULL OF CRAP! LET’S SEE HOW MANY TALK SHOWS AND JUDGE SHOWS PEOPLE CAN HANDLE! BRING STARTING OVER BACK!

September 19, 2006 at 9:56 am
(30) Kim says:

I am very disappointed about this show being cancelled!! I am finding that any real show that has substance and that is geared toward “helping” women gets cancelled and it’s not fair! The cast should get some grant monies and venture off on their own!! This is a community service…helping women overcome many adversities in their lives. To the cast, don’t give up on us “we need you”!! I knew something was wrong when I saw that trashy Jerry Springer on at 10:00, lose the trash and keep the class!

Disappointed in MI

September 19, 2006 at 3:11 pm
(31) B. Humphrey says:

I clicked on TiVo this morning and discovered no upcoming SO episodes. I tried the Starting Over website and it took me to NBC Universal!

How disappointing is this! SO was one of the best (and most useful) shows on television. Most of the reality shows entertain their viewers by making fools of the participants. I guess a show about women supporting other women just isn’t commercially relevant. Sad indeed that a program designed to bring out the best in people can’t make it.

This show was for women of all ages. I am a grandmother so I’m not in the desired “demographics.” Of course I am also a retired college graduate with disposable income but the people making these decisions aren’t taking very efficient polls or just don’t care what I think.

Good-bye Rhonda, Iyanla and Dr. Stan. You have helped countless numbers of viewers, myself included, and you will be missed. Thank you for all of your hard and dedicated work.

September 19, 2006 at 7:27 pm
(32) Sherry says:

Out of all the returning Programs from last season, the one that I looked most forward to was “Starting Over”. I believe that many fans of the show not only learned about the women on the shows, I think they also learned alot about themselves. I will miss that show very much and I hope one of the other Networks will pick it up. Good bye to all the wonderful Staff that made the program so important and informative.

(33) Lara says:

This show saved my life - literally. I was suicidal because I was so depressed, but watching this show showed me that PEOPLE CAN CHANGE - evolution is possible. The power is in our hands. IT was a life-changing experience for me, watching this show. I will be forever grateful that I saw it.

September 20, 2006 at 10:40 am
(35) diana says:

It makes perfect sense that the ONE reality show that actually helped people on Network TV got the hook. The women should have been laying on the couch listening to alternative music whining about the others in the house and how to get a boy to like them and it would have been #1 in the ratings! What a complete waste of energy it was to rally around this show with NBC!

September 20, 2006 at 11:41 am
(36) Sheila Wolfe says:

I can not believe Starting Over has been cancelled. I have been waiting All Summer for the new season to Start. Starting Over Changed Lives. Not only those who lived in the Starting Over House but also those who tuned in each day. I Can Not believe such a wonderful, inspiring show has been taken away from the viewers. Does the Starting Over House Still exist without the cameras???? I wish another network would snatch them up. They are really Great!

September 20, 2006 at 2:37 pm
(37) Chrisy says:

THIS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I CAN’T BELIEVED THEY CANCELED THE BEST SHOW ON TV. I HAVE BEEN WAITING ALL SUMMER FOR IT TO COME BACK. IT JUST PROVES WHAT A MESSED UP WORLD WE LIVE IT, THAT THE ONLY SHOW THAT TRUELY HELPS PEOPLE OUT WITH WHATEVER PROBLEM HAS BEEN CANCELED. I WILL BE SO LOST WITHOUT STARTING OVER. GOD BLESS IYANLA, RHONDA, & DR, STAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

September 20, 2006 at 6:26 pm
(38) Deb and Nicole says:

I can’t say enough about this show, me and my sister watched it faithfully. It gave us so much insight on helping my mother deal with her divorce. I can’t believe it will not be on!! What a pity..

September 21, 2006 at 10:19 am
(39) Ladonna says:

I am disapointed that “Starting Over” was cancelled. It’s a shame that they cancel the good programs and let the garbage stay on TV. Most of what comes on TV nowadays insults my intelligence.

“Starting Over” was a good program showing women trying to improve their lives. But I guess that’s not what “sells” out there in the media. I guess they would rather see skanky women on TV who hop out of one bed and into another.

I’ll never understand how a program like “Starting Over” can be cancelled while junk like “The Flavor of Love” can stay on the air. Who wants to watch women compete with each other for a god awful ugly man.

(40) Katie says:

I was very saddened to hear that Starting Over was cancelled. I look forward to this show every day. It’s amazing how we see ourselves in the women on that show. And unfortunate that the people in charge could care less.

Goodbye IYANLA, RHONDA and DR. STAN…even though you worked with 6 women in a house..you helped millions more. THANK YOU!!

I can not belive that this show is not coming back on the air. It is one if not the best reality program. We need someone smart to bring it back on.To me this program and Dr. Phil are so very helpful and very positive for us all. It needs to come back on!!!Please.

I am crushed that Starting Over has been cancelled. I have never missed an episode(taping when I could not be here to watch it). I know it has helped a lot of people cope with their own problems. I am very sad that it is over. I am going to email LifeTime T.V. and beg them to pick Starting Over up. It seems like the shows that really interest women of all ages are the first to be cancelled. I don’t understand how a show that is loved by millions and does so much good gets cancelled? Please everyone that loves S.O. write to Lifetime T.V. and see what kind of reponse we get.

My best to all the brave women who shared their struggles and joys with us and my sympathies to those women who will never get the opportunity to reach their goals. As a therapist, I am very disappointed that SO was cancelled. The coaches were right on each and every episode and not only helped the participants, but helped the viewers as well as myself in working with my clients! What were they thinking? WHEN I WAS HEALING AFTER SURGERY I GOT REALLY HOOKED ON STARTING OVER (BETTER PAIN RELIEVER THAN THE VICODIN)I FOUND THAT FOLLOWING ALLISON WAS THE HILIGHT OF MY DAYS, I STILL WONDER HOW SHE’S DOING AFTER HER SURGERIES…….

October 23, 2006 at 12:22 pm
(55) Sheila E. says:

It greatly disturbs me that a high-quality, Daytime Emmy nominated, healing and cathartic television program could be cancelled while so many non-essential talk & reality TV continue to air. Normally, quality shows are cancelled after 5 - 10 years of airing. Of all the TV programs, this one was the only one in which I woke up 4 a.m. to watch when it re-aired. I anticipated seeing what challenges were given to each SO lady/student. Even though Lisa was a spoiled brat, I looked forward to having her return and graduate. If Bunim/Murray Productions canned this program because of budgetary concerns, ask them to contact me (I write grants and budgets); I know how to work with a small amount of money). I’d whittle down the budget and still produce an outstanding program. It would be easier to fine-tune an already successful program than to create a new one. Please bring “Starting Over” back.
