Melinda Eliminated! Blake and Jordin In The American Idol Finals

Wednesday May 16, 2007
This may be the biggest shocker in American Idol history. Despite being a favorite from the very beginning of Idol's sixth season, Melinda Doolittle has been eliminated! Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks are moving on to next week's finals.

Where did Melinda go wrong? As Ryan would say, did America get this one right? Vote in the poll and tell me what you think about tonight's results.

This was my first time watching the show and I’m very disappointed with it, because Melinda Doolittle clearly should be still in the running. it seems like singing is not what American Idol is all about any more, and Blake Lewis should not be in the top two

(3) Colorado Guy says:

Melinda did nothing wrong. Unfortunately, she and Jordin were likely going for the same set of voters (jazz lovers, contemporary music lovers, and similar), while Blake had another set of voters all to himself (rockers, hip-hip lovers, etc.) — So, Blake was safe — when the Melinda/Jordin voters were voting, many were probably thinking that Melinda was so safe that they voted for Jordin (to make sure that Jordin was one of the ones to make it to the finals).

But, rest assured — after recovering from the loss, Melinda will never be a back-up singer again — she has greatness in front of her.

(4) WJ Smith says:

I have to admit, she pulled the punches, listened to what the judges were saying, and honed her skill to the point that everyone thought she was ssure0fire winner. Although a shocker to most, I had an aching feeling she was going. It comes down to X-Factor to me. Blake and Jordin are young, and let’s face it, it’s the young shae the biggest share on who buy CD’s. Melinda doesn’t deserve to go, it’s a crying shame, but the only thing she should have worked on is on her taking compliments, not being so modest. She reminded me of that self-conscient woman on Police Squad. Too many quiet, thank you’s and her stale personality did get to me. I wish she had done a few “FREEZE DIRTBAG” moments to shock everyone. Jordin is definately stronger of the remaining two, and with Melinda unjustly gone it’s an even tougher call for the final two. Although not my choice, my money is on Blake which could make for another surprise on Idol this year. I do genuinely feel, he’ll take his career further than Jordin will, but Jordin will come up with a more interesting CD.

jordin sparks we love you your the greatest i have voted for her since the top ten melinda has nothing to worry about she is a great singer and will have a career just like she wants i love you to melinda good job

(6) joeyD says:

Melinda’s strengths really are big voiced bluesy soulful ballads, for some reason they were trying to make her into a hard rockin’ Tina Turner type. She ain’t. She lacks the physical attributes and is simply too refined for that. She should’ve stuck with ballads that displayed her incredible vocal gifts, “Nutbush City Limits” and “I’m a woman” did not do her justice. And now she’s gone. The other 2 don’t hold a candle to her vocally, but they are cuter, younger and tap into the emotions of the fanatical, younger voting block.

(8) eve says:

melinda being voted off was not about singing. maybe america just wasn’t ready for another strong “BLACK” voice. but idol is just a stepping stone to bigger and better offers for melinda doolittle. watch out because she WILL be coming to an arena near you, minus the other 11 contestants!! OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE MELINDA - WEEK AFTER WEEK!!

(9) tweety007 says:

Unfortunately this has become more of a popularity contest for the younger people than what it shoulod be. This is a SINGING competion - not a popularity contest. They need to limite the number of calls to no more than 10 per phone number (if they can do it on the computer and other contests- they can do it for this too) and then the people might REALLY vote the the BEST instead of wasting votes just to be FUNNY and throw the contest. Blake is probably is nice guy - but come on - not an American idol, maybe a teeny bopper or hip-hopper idol, but not an AMERICAN IDOL. If this were a true contest it would come down to the BEST two singers, Melinda and Jordin. I hope they change the voting system and we’ll see if it makes a difference on the TRUE talent that remains in the future.

(10) wayne Stuart says:

Unbelievable! The show must be fixed and it has created a negative image for Fox TV, The show’s producers and other shows that are being promoted by Fox TV. It sends the wrong message to the audience as well, when you have such powerful singers with loads of personality and lots of range it’s a no brainer. Blake is good but compared with Melinda and Jordan, is not in the same category. My family is upset by tonight’s results and will boycott Fox television. It’s a shame and a sham. Maybe they should bring back Sanjaia to make this really a stupid singing competition. to quote a famous line from the movies, “I’m mad as hell and not going to take it anymore”

(13) Joe says:

This is outrageous. How can Blake still be in it? I am so sick of that hip-hop broken record crap he relies on ….. I am sure with all the 13 year old voters, he is sure to win it ….. Might as well be Sangia …. Time to find something else to watch …. WHAT A RIP !!!!!

May 16, 2007 at 11:57 pm
(14) Molly says:

I disagree with Wayne Stuart’s comment. I do not believe the show was fixed, and I do not believe the Fox network would spend time on fixing such a thing. I agree with WJ Smith. I believe that America thought that she had it in the bag, and so her fans just let it drop last night. Fox network pays those who run American Idol. After the judges gave those amazing comments to her, do you honestly think Fox “fixed” the vote??? It’s just not plausible. I know Melinda was the best, and she will go far. Jennifer Hudson went far and so will she.

(15) Adirondacker says:

Now Jordin should win hands down. If Blake wins it really will be that America got it wrong. He’s OK but pretty ordinary. No real charisma like Jordin.

This is absolutely unbelievable. This woman was by far the strongest performer. It’s time to leave television media to followers of Paris Hilton, I guess….

I am stunned that Melinda is finished on American Idol. She has an amazing voice and is a very nice woman. I can’t wait until she has a CD. I will not be watching the final show. I could care who wins. Melinda is my 2007 American Idol!!

I too was shocked that Melinda was eliminated. I wanted a Blake/Melinda finale, and my favorite is Blake, but we assumed Melinda would win and it would be a great show. So her leaving put a damper on what would have been amazing and stellar excitement about Blake making it. Melinda is a GEM and she just finally grew on me in the past few weeks as she started to show her personality. She will be successful and blessed, I truly believe and she will be GREAT on tour. I also truly believe that Blake earned his place in the final — I never would have thought I would become such a big fan of his, and my mother, who is 80, is also! His fans are much more far-reaching than teens, believe me. We’re reading more about him and his background - how he’s very involved and respected on the Seattle music scene, he has toured with an esteemed acapella group, his family recently took out a $25,000 loan to build him a recording studio in their barn. This man is fascinating, fun and entertaining, a good friend to the contestants on the show (by their words), dedicated and gifted (arranges, produces, plays guitar and piano, beatboxes, as we know, AND his voice is wonderful — soothing, sexy, on pitch, creative, with a very good range (I am a singer and writer so those who say he can’t sing aren’t being truthful). I am so pleased that he has come this far and with the right choices, he could move right into the top music scene in his genre very easily. Next week will be sad in there will be no Melinda, but something is right with the world when a young man who has worked so hard, who is so diverse in his talents, and has a family 100% behind him — gets his chance.

(21) Molinaro says:

I’m not surprised that Melinda was voted off. There are a great many different tastes in music. Seriously, how many people regularly listen to the kind of music Melinda was performing?
She’s old fashioned and that is not going to win a contest where a large portion of the vote comes from teens and even pre-teens.
And, not one of her performances could be called original. She has loads of talent and a flawless voice, but .. limited appeal.

This competition was probably fixed from the beginning. For and example …look at how long sanjia was on there. He should have been gone long before they finally let him go. He wasn’t even close to being an Idol. That was a publicity stunt to get more and more people to watch the show. no Doubt. Now with Melinda. Absoulutely rediculous. Someone said she was to old fashioned. I bet you no matter what song you put in front of that woman she will sing the heck out of it. Everyone knows whether they will admit it or not MELINDA IS THE TRUE IDOL OF 2007

(25) Mickey says:

Malinda is gone!!! I couldn’t be happier! She should have been disqualified in the first place. This competition is supposed to be for those without prior experience, thus, the amateur. Malinda already has a professional career in back-up singing. Should Whitney Houston get on there next year to boost her career too? Malinda used American Idol, to further her career, as those who were just trying to start one lost their chance at winning while she remained. Why didn’t anyone pick up on this?) Quess she has gotten what she was after. Couldn’t do it on her own apparently. Not to mention, she really is not that talented. She may have been a “consistent” performer, as Simon states. I have to agree. She did “consistenty” ruin the rock, pop and contry songs that she sang. I’ll give her this though, she did shine when she sang older soul songs. She will have to stick with that. Modern stuff just won’t work for her. As far as Jordin and Blake go…they’re both great and I’m happy for them that they didn’t lose out to Malinda. They have talent.

(28) Jill says:

I don’t think people are giving Blake enough credit. He is different. No one like him has ever been on American Idol. I love Melinda and Jordin, but we have seen this before. This is not to say we shouldn’t like their style. I think they will both have an outstanding career because they are both very talented. But, don’t underestimate the power of being unique. Blake has his own spin on things to offer and that’s what makes people love him. I predict Jordin will win, but Blake will still get my vote.

I did not watch American Idol before, I watched this season because of Melinda, when she was eliminated I dont think I will watch more…The program loses it’s credibility because the best vocalist is not the person who wins…
Jordan and Blake are very “pop” and commercial, Melinda is the better vocalist with more sophistication, but she is not commercial…The American audience prefers pop!
After this, I’m sure American Idol is not a serious or fair competition!

(51) HuskyMiller says:

The problem with American Idol is that it’s a popularity contest masquerading as a talent show. If it were truly about talent the American public would never be allowed to vote. Judges from the music industry would make the decision. It’s a 16 week long marketing focus group designed to figure out which of the 12 no talents do American teenage girls and their mothers want to buy records from. (By the way, it does not take 16 weeks to figure out who among 12 people is the best singer). That’s problem number one with the show. #2, why are contestants that are trying to be contemporary pop singers, forced to croon genres like broadway show tunes, Motown, The 80’s, and the songs of Neil Sedeka? The judges want them to be hip and current but the show forces them to sing songs 20, 30, and 40 years old in styles they will never tackle in their professional pop music career. It’s just a matter of time before everyone eventually stumbles. It makes no sense. Problem #3, America has no business voting. Period. All reality shows do not allow the general public to vote. To that end the undeserving winner will be Blake. (You heard it here first). Beat boxing came out and died over 20 years ago. But let a white boy do it on national tv in front of white middle America, and they eat it up like the newest thing since the Apple iphone. NOBODY DOES BEAT BOXING ANYMORE. IT’S SOOO 1982! But this happens all the time in music. Black people invent it, but the masses don’t accept it, and they don’t give a damn until some one white does it. (see Elvis and Eminem). And while I’m at it, let’s just keep it real–Melinda and Jordin split the black vote, along with the real musicians vote. Trust me, not even a casual fan of Hip-Hop is voting for Blake. Please! Blake got all the little white teen age girls, people who are tone deaf, and racists like Elisabeth Hasselback (from The View), who can’t bring themselves to support anyone or anything black. I’m not a Blake hater or anything, and of course It’s ok if you want to be a Blake fan. But don’t try to tell me he as more singing talent than the two girls. I saw this coming weeks ago when they got rid of Stephanie Edwards. She along with Lakisha, Jordin and Melissa were far in a way THE best singers this year. All of them Black women. But America can’t allow that. So they had to go. In America you can have a Real World House with 7 white kids and only one black, but not vice versa. In American you can have the Bachelor on ABC for 10 seasons but still no Black bachelor. But I digress, back to Idol…It’s happened before. Remember Jennifer Hudson, Latoya London and Fantasia? Clearly they were the best of the bunch but that was not the top three or even top two you got that year. (Luckily Fantasia eeked out a win). Nevertheless, none of you should be surprised they got rid of Melissa. We should consider ourselves lucky the Sanjaya joke finally became embarrassing enough that people let it go. Face it, it’s not a fair contest and it was never intended to be. Not as long as they’re gonna let regular humans with no ear for music or ability to recognize real musical talent vote over, and over, and over. Remember the same idiots voting are the same no-talent tone deaf losers that tryout for the show, and the parents and friends who told them that they could sing. But to be fair before all you white folks lose your minds, (do not assume that I am Black), I revert back to my initial comment, that the show is not really a talent show. It’s a marketing popularity contest. The show is simply asking America, “Tell us what you want and we’ll give it to you.” And when you look at it in that sense, America ALWAYS gets it right.

(52) HuskyMillerisalittleracist says:

People like you really offend me. You are one of those whiny, “black people did it first, they are better than white people and they deserve better treatment” people that make reverse racism a problem in this country. And yes there is a problem with that!!! I am not racist. I have friends and family of all color and think each and every one of them is special and worthwhile. There is a double standard in this country and I am sick of listening to this crap. Who cares who did what first. If someone is talented and deserves something, give it to them regardless of the color of their skin. Yes, there is still racism in this country, but it goes both ways. White people are the only racists anymore!!

As for Blake, we all know that beat boxing isn’t main stream anymore, but it never went completely away and it doesn’t matter if a black person did it first. Just because that is the case, it doesn’t mean that is the only group of people who can be good at it or allowed to do it. If Blake was black, he would still get my vote because he is unique. I still think Melinda is a better singer and she will have a great career, but the show isn’t called America’s Best Singer. I think Jordin is very talented too. I will buy both of their albums, but Blake is offering something that hasn’t been done on American Idol before and if middle America is just now being introduce to beat-boxing oh well. You are correct that the people voting are mostly teenagers and most of them weren’t around when beat-boxing was popular so it is new to them. Unfortunately Melinda doesn’t appeal to that group as much as Jordin and Blake do. I think Jordin will win American Idol this year and she is half-black, so are you going to say she got votes b/c her mother is white???

As for your comment about Stephanie Edwards she can sing and she did deserve to stay around longer, but she was by no means one of the best and like I said before, been there-done that.

You also talk about Elizabeth Hasselbeck being racist, but I don’t think you should be pointing any fingers. Although I don’t agree with her view half the time, she has never made a racist comment on The View, unlike half the crap you put in here. Reread what you wrote and really think about what you are saying. It sounds to me that regardless of your color, you have something against white people!

I think malinda is the best singer since the start of American Idol several years ago. her range is fantastic to say the least.
Why do you let the public make the final call?

Okay, okay, enough of the ridiculous racism back and forth comments!! American Idol is a singing contest and I believe that it still continues to be. While Melinda Doolittle was easily one of the top contenders this year, she didn’t have the “entertainment and marketing” focus that perhaps the other 2 finalists have. Also, maybe her age was a factor (although I don’t know that they have any type of age limit)but I think the majority of the votes come from our younger generation. And I totally support Simon when he said that Blake, by far, takes the biggest risks……And ya know what? IT WORKS FOR HIM!!! He proves time and time again that he has what it takes to make it big in America. It has nothing to do with Black, White, Asian, Mexican, any type of racism…… Personally, I think that LaKisha, Melinda, Jordin and Blake will all “make it” in their career, whichever path they choose. America certainly has plenty of big female R&B/Pop voices….But someone like Blake Lewis, who has brilliant confidence, unique style and a sexy falsetto voice to support it will skyrocket, whether he wins or not. As for Jordin, she is only 17 and still has a lot to learn and so much room to grow. Her talent is already through the roof and she has SOOOO much ahead of her. Either Blake or Jordin winning American Idol this season will be a victory well deserved.

If the judges knows the result, and they know it shouldn’t be that way. I strongly believe they should have the chance to give the last vote. It was Melinda from the very beginning the BEST.

SHOCKED

Is there any doubt now that AI voting is controlled by the female Clearasil crowd? Blake’s forte is distracting attention away from his mediocre voice with gimmicks, such as hiccups and burps. The little girl may be able to sing a love song with feeling in ten years or so. Melinda was so far superior, the vote had to be embarrassing for AI. But when the vote is controlled by a group of people who have nothing better to do than spend hours on the telephone, you get skewed results. AI needs to address and correct this problem, or it will continue to get these moronic results.

I too am not watching the final. Melinda, you are my American Idol and I will buy your album. Blake should not be in the final two. Jordin is okay but not as good as Melinda.

Well I too wont be watching the finale. If AI want to keep their ratings they should very quickly decide what they are going to do about the manipulative people who said that they were going to make this a Jordin vs Blake Finale. Why does the good singers e.g Melinda Doolittle have to suffer as this is a Music Competition and not a beauty contest. Any way very disappointed and hope that we can see a change in this unfair voting system. From a very disappointed AI fan and never missed a show from season 1
