The third season of The Sing Off saw a cappella singing groups compete in challenges like creating a medley of superstar songs with a Halloween twist. In the end, the competition came down to three finalists:
- Dartmouth Aires. Sixteen male students from Dartmouth College--an Ivy League college in Hanover, New Hampshire--showed their a cappella chops with outstanding performances like their Queen Medley. Know for their theatrical stage presence, Dartmouth often relied heavily on front man Micheal Odokara-Okigbo. The other members of Dartmouth Aires is made up are Nic Chuaqui, Xavier Curry, Nate Davis, Daniel Freeman, Daniel Leopold, Justin Lerman, Henry Luehrman, Brendan Lynch-Salamon, Jack Merril, Clark Moore, Preston Suan, Robert Hoffman, Will Hart, Alex Taylor and Ethan Weinberg.
- Pentatonix. A five-person group made up of four men and one woman, Pentatonix formed in Arlington, Texas a day before auditioning for The Sing Off. During the season, Sing Off judges lauded Pentatonix for their innovation and modern, electronica inspiration. Mitch Grassi also surprised viewers with his stunning falsetto, unveiled near the end of the season. Childhood friends Mitch Grassi, Scott Hoying and Kirstin Maldonado reportedly found the two other members, Kevin Olusola and Avi Kaplan, through YouTube.
- Urban Method. A Denver, Colorado hip hop group that fuses the talents of eight musicians with professional, studio experience, Urban Method was also created specifically to compete in the NBC singing competition. Their weakness has been when challenged to perform outside their comfort zone (like rock songs) but did well enough covering the country song, "Before He Cheats," to move on in the competition. Urban Method is made up of Liz Ager, Kim Dawson, Troy Horne, Mykal Hudson, Tony Huerta, Zak Troiano, Katie Turley and Richard Steighner.
The Sing Off Season Three finale featured guest performances by judges Sara Bareilles (a three time Grammy-nominee) and Ben Folds (band leader of Ben Folds Five), host Nick Lachey (Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica) and singer Smokey Robinson.
Urban Method came in third, and was the first group eliminated. Pentatonix was declared the winner of The Sing Off Season Three, taking home a Sony Music recording contract and $100,000 cash prize. Dartmouth Aires came in second.
