Producers' Pick

Ryan noted that the producers' pick was designed to "test the contestants" although the picks seemed rather predictable and individually suited to each contestants. Plus? We never got to see or hear from these "producers." Are they the same people who banned David Archuleta's father from backstage until further notice?

In any event, the producers pick Dan Fogelberg's "Longer" for David Archuleta. It's a ballad, which again, doesn't seem to test young David all that much considering he's where he's at by singing mostly ballads. Randy recycled his "you can sing anything, you can sing the phone book" line on David. He said it was "another hot one" and that David was "vocally in the zone." Paula deemed David's performance "lovely." Simon thought that David sang the song very well, but that the "song and lyrics were horrible." He found it too "gooey." But overall, he thought David "did enough to get into the finals."

For Syesha, the producers picked "Hit Me Up" by Gia Farrell, which is from the "Happy Feet" soundtrack. Yes, the movie about tap dancing penguins. Randy found the performance, "just okay." Paula thought it was good, but she wasn't sure it "defined [Syesha]" and that Paula's not "sure it was enough" to get Syesha into the finals. Simon thought the performance was "fun and young" but it wasn't "defining." He thought her defining moment came last week, with the Sam Cook song ("A Change Is Gonna Come"), which may be Simon's way of saying Syesha's overstayed her welcome?

Finally, David Cook was given Aerosmith's "I Don't Want to Miss A Thing" by the producers. Randy thought the performance was "okay" and "predictable, very predictable." Paula gave David a standing ovation and said, "see you in the finals." Simon, succinctly summed things up by saying, "David Cook wins the night."
