What did you think of the people who live in the second town you visited, Laurens, SC?
I had been to the South many times and I thought I knew what the South was, but not until you live with people and live through their lives do you know what its really about. Laurens kind of really schooled me about what the South was and what it is now. Theres a really tragic history and there are some really beautiful parts of it too. I think we typically, as Northerners, stereotype what the South is in so many negative ways. We kind of forget all the beautiful things that they contribute to make this country a country. The people there were a bunch of storytellers. And everybody has a story. And everybody is good at telling it. I think that, in comparison, New Yorkers and Northerners are so guarded. And it was kind of refreshing and humbling in a lot of ways. And Laurens, it definitely made me want to go on to the next region and the next region -- because its very much a cultural study.
If youre ever near the first town you made over (Jeffersonville, NY), do you think youll stop by?
I actually bought a house up there. It was so beautiful. You get so involved in these communities, and, like I said the worst part is leaving. So by the end of this series, Ill probably have like 40 houses and be broke -- around the country, because you get so attached emotionally. I found out that Im a terrible host because I cry pretty incessantly because you get so tied up in all of these people. So, like I said, I will visit Jeffersonville more often because I now have a little getaway house up there.
Thats really nice!
Yep. They are cool people.
