Like MTV's wildly successful Jersey Shore, the network's new show, BuckWild, is being condemned for offering a stereotypical and offensive view of an American subculture.
BuckWild revolves around a group of young adults who live in West Virginia's Appalachian Mountains. In other words, they represent a population formerly (and often pejoratively) known as "hillbillies" and locals aren't thrilled with the way the kids are being portrayed as "wild."
In a BuckWild preview, one of the cast members sums up his world view, "West Virginia is a place founded on freedom. For me and my friends, that means the freedom to do whatever the f*ck we want."
BuckWild premieres January 3, 2013 on MTV.
