'Project Runway' Season 12 Unveils New Twists

New Role for Mentor Tim Gunn

Cast of 'Project Runway' Season 12

After last year's team-based competition, Project Runway Season 12 returns to an individual-based competition and features a diverse group of designers who represents four continents.

But, judge Michael Kors has not returned, and will once again be replaced by last year's sub designer Zac Posen.

The guest judges this season include Kate Bosworth, Kelly Osbourne, Allison Williams, Sigourney Weaver, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Kaley Cuoco.

There are also a number of new elements being revealed in Season 12, for example:

  • PlayRunway: a new interactive on-screen feature, which allows fans to use smartphones, tablets and computers to share their reactions to the competition as it unfolds.
  • Runway Redemption (#RunwayRedemption): A contestant from a past season (either Ra’mon-Lawrence Coleman of Season 6, Valerie Mayen of Season 8, or Kate Pankoke of Season 11) will be chosen by fans (voting on mylifetime.com) to be the 16th designer on Season 12.
  • Project Runway Superfan Makeover Contest: Viewers can submit video applications to be chosen as one of seven super fans win a once in a lifetime fashion makeover and chance to be featured on an upcoming episode.
  • More Tim Gunn: finally the real star of Project Runway, aka mentor Tim Gunn, will get more air time and power as he advises judges in their deliberations and gains the power to "rescue" the one designer he feels deserves a second chance. Lifetime explains, “Gunn will join Klum and the judges to watch the runway show, answer questions the judges have about what transpired in the workroom and give them an opportunity to physically examine the workmanship of each design.”

Project Runway Season 12 begins Thursday, July 18 at 9/8 Central.
