One of the Most Important Days in a Woman's Life
No, it's not her wedding day. According to Heidi, it's her high school prom, and the contenders were challenged this week to create a prom dress for 17 year olds from New Jersey.
Role Reversal
The 17 year olds would also act as the models for the contenders and in a role reversal, instead of having the contenders select their models, the client-models selected the contenders based on their portfolios.
What Was She Thinking?
Chris, the 44 year old from San Francisco, was greatly amused by the thought of one of the girls selecting him based on his portfolio because his portfolio contained some very. . .interesting work. Chris's area of expertise is costume design, and he modeled his own designs, complete with outrageous drag queen make-up, really big hair, and gigantic fake boobs. We have to agree with Chris. Whoever selected him as their designer based on that portfolio (which we were shown quick glimpses of) must have really enjoyed the outlandish creativity evident in it, but we do have to wonder, what was she thinking looking through it?
Default Selection
It was slightly awkward when Victorya, the 34 year old from Seoul, asked her client why she chose her, and her client informed her that Victorya was the last contender left, although her client was quick to point out that she liked Victorya's style so it worked out great.
Unwanted Mini-Me
Christian, the 21 year old from Baltimore, had a client who was his mini-me, personality-wise. His client was outspoken, opinionated and right off the bat, butted heads with Christian. It was very amusing to watch Christian, who is usually so quick with the catty rejoinder, be humbled by a 17 year old version of himself.
Time and Budget
The designers were given a budget of $250.00 and 2 days to complete their prom creations.
You Think You Have it Hard
There was a particularly funny exchange between Victorya, Sweet P and Chris where Sweet P stressed that she could not be in the bottom again (she was in the bottom 2 last week). Victorya chimed in that she has been in the bottom twice before. Chris then declared that he had been voted off by the judges, which effectively 'won' him this particular contest.
Satisfying the Client. . .and Their Mothers
At the second fitting for the prom dresses, the girls brought along their mothers who had their own opinion on the creations, and sometimes those opinions conflicted with their daughters' views on the dresses.
Rally!
Christian's client really got the better of him, and he grew more and more despondent as the challenge wore on. At one point, he remarked to Tim Gunn that he was 'done' and that if someone had to go it might as well be him. Tim reprimanded Christian on his down-and-out attitude and told him to not quit but to 'rally!' Even Tim's pep talks are awesome.
Big Clue
Ricky, the 35 year old from California, mentioned that he had made his girlfriend's prom dress. Then referring to his sexual orientation, said, 'that should have been a clue right there!'
Immunity Means. . .
. . .he can do whatever he wants! Or as Rami, winner of last week's challenge, put it, 'take a risk’ and craft a dress that was a reflection of who he was as a designer, which strictly speaking, wasn’t fulfilling the requirements of the challenge.
We've Seen the Future and it's Sweet (P)
When the clients got a little too hyper in the workroom while waiting to take the runway, Sweet P remarked that she attended Catholic school just like the girls, and they should look at themselves, then at her, and that's where they'd be 'in 30 years.'
The Fourth Chair
This week's guest judge is renowned designer, Gilles Mendes
That Was Awkward
We must say, this week’s show displayed some incredibly awkward and stiff walks down the runway, as many of the young models didn't really have a good command of their high heeled shoes.
