Project Runway Recap -- Season Five, Episode Nine -- Joe Eliminated

Episode Air Date: September 17, 2008

From Katie Lee

That Would Be Interesting

Leanne and Korto were joking around about what their next challenge would be and Leanne quipped, “we’re going to design evening gowns for infants.” Frankly, that sounds like a pretty interesting challenge to us!

Sticking to Her Guns

Continuing to straddle the line between cocky and confident, Kenley declared that she didn’t understand why she was in the bottom 3 last week, and thus, she was “sticking to [her] strategy, [which is to] stay true to [herself] as a designer [and] not worry about what the judges think.”

Mothers and Daughters

Instead of doing the usual models elimination, Heidi asked 6 middle aged women to join her on the runway. The designers were less than thrilled at the reveal, thinking they would have to design for the women and as Leanne noted, “none of us were thrilled [about] designing an old lady outfit.” However, that was just a fake-out by Heidi, who revealed that the designers would be designing for the women’s daughters – young twenty-somethings.

Professional Makeover

This week’s challenge, sponsored by TreSemme, was to craft a head-to-toe makeover for a recent college graduate.

Two Clients for the Price of One!

After being randomly paired up with their clients, the designers were told that the mothers would also have a say in their daughters’ makeovers, so essentially, both mother and daughter were the clients.

Consult, Shop, Design!

The designers were given 30 minutes to consult with their clients, and then another 30 minutes and 100 dollars to buy the necessary materials. They were given 2 days to complete their designs.

First Jobs

Several designers revealed what their first jobs were, and how it influenced their current careers. Leanne’s first job was to work at a small clothing store and it inspired her to try and create her own clothing line. Joe’s first job was in the stockroom at Gucci, and opening all the boxes containing all those fabulous designs really inspired him as a designer. Kenley revealed that she’s worked a lot of jobs since moving from Florida to New York City and she’s had to overcome a lot of obstacles. Finally, Jerell revealed that his first job was at McDonald’s and not surprisingly, it didn’t really impact his designing career but it did give him “bad skin from standing over a fryer.”
