Sexy Teacher
At the first fitting, Leanne seemed to have the most problems with her clients, as they didn’t like the top part of the dress/jacket ensemble she was creating. Leanne had to recreate much of the dress, which would take more time and work, but Leanne took it in stride, proclaiming, “one sexy teacher dress coming right up!”
The Worst Insult?
Apparently the worst insult that can be leveled at a designer is saying they aren’t versatile. Jerell dismissively noted that Kenley can make a great retro dress, “but that’s all she serves up.” Later, Kenley was trash-talking Suede and noted that he’s not a good designer because “he can’t interpret his style into different looks. . .it’s horrible.”
Hairy Consult
At the second fitting, Tim introduced the designers and their clients (now sans their mothers) to Jeanie Syfu, lead stylist for TreSemme, who was there to do a consult with each of the designer/client pair about their hair styling choices, such as cut and color.
Tim Says. . .
Tim was concerned that Joe’s outfit was not exactly suitable to his client’s chosen field of graphic design, but Joe thought a professional look would be adaptable, no matter the field. Tim had concerns about Suede’s jacket, particularly the placement of the pockets and whether the sleeves were even. He liked Jerell’s outfit, but was concerned about some “excess material” in the blouse. Finally, he noted that Kenley’s dress had some tulle peeking out from the hemline, and that he wondered if perhaps the tulle should be the same length as the skirt. Kenley was dismissive of Tim’s comments, noting that “Tim doesn’t understand me as a designer” and that she was not “going to listen to that.”
Guest Judge and a Bonus
While there will no longer be any immunity, the winner of this challenge will be featured in a TreSemme ad in Elle magazine. Helping to decide that winner was guest judge, designer Cynthia Rowley.
Hip and Young
The top three designers this week were Korto, Jerell and Kenley. The judges thought that Kenley’s bold printed retro dress with sleeveless brown vest and a wide, beige belt was “cute [and] charming.” They joked that because her client’s style was so similar to her own, it was like she “found her mini-me.” They thought that she picked interesting prints and that it was the “right style and clothes for the job.” Korto’s green printed dress with tan, fitted jacket was thought to be “perfectly tailored” and made her client look “current.” Cynthia Rowley thought the jacket “was really cool.” Finally Jerell’s long pencil skirt with ruffled blouse and long cardigan was exalted because it “transformed [his client].” It embodied what “a 22 year old’s idea of sophistication” was, and it was “great for [his client’s] body type.”
Old and Cliche
The bottom three designers were Leanne, Suede and Joe. Leanne’s navy dress and gray jacket ensemble was thought to be “old-fashioned” and that none of it “felt fresh.” They thought that the “dress was more charming without the jacket” and that a design should be “sophisticated but youthful” and hers definitely was not. Suede’s purple printed dress and brown jacket with flared sleeves ensemble was deemed “a disaster” by the judges. They thought that it was ill-suited to his client’s career as a photographer, and that the jacket was “gratuitous.” Nina Garcia said she had “lots of problems” with the design, and that it seemed to age his client “20 years.” Finally, Joe’s pinstriped skirt and suit ensemble was deemed a “cliché.” Cynthia Rowley noted that a professional look doesn’t necessarily mean a suit, and that there were “many other options.” His design was a “total cliché” and showed that he was “out of touch” as a designer.
Another Twofer
Jerell was named the winner for the second week in a row, which thrilled him to no end.
Outsy Daisy
It came down to Suede and Joe. Suede’s design was lambasted for being “dated” and “completely impractical.” But it was Joe’s “drab and cliché” design that ended up getting the ax. Joe noted that he liked watching the show with his daughter and that when Heidi uttered her famous “auf weidersehen,” his daughter thought Heidi was saying “outsy daisy” and Joe said he “received my outsy daisy today.”
