Project Runway Recap - - Season Five, Episode Ten - - Suede Eliminated

Episode Air Date: Septembe 24, 2008

From Katie Lee

Stepping It Up

Suede astutely observed that he has been in the bottom for 3 straight challenges, and that he “needed to step up [his] game, or [he’s] gone.”

Finally, Some Swapping

Perhaps hoping to mix things up a little, Heidi told the designers that they would all get a chance to re-select their models, and not just the winner of the last challenge. While Korto and Jerell decided to stay with their models, Kenley and Leanne opted to switch. Kenley went with Joe’s model, while Leanne picked Suede’s model, which didn’t sit well with Suede. He called Leanne’s actions “childish” and vowed to win a challenge so that he could get his model back.

Music and Fashion

This week’s challenge required the designers to design for each other, and their outfit would be inspired by a musical genre. Tim randomly assigned the designers their “clients” as well as the musical genre. In the end, it worked out as follows – Jerell designed for Kenley whose genre was Pop, Korto designed for Suede whose genre was Punk, Leanne designed for Korto whose genre was Country, Kenley designed for Leanne whose genre was Hip-Hop, and Suede designed for Jerell whose genre was Rock-n-Roll.

A Day and Dollars

The designers were given $150 and one day to complete their designs.

Rappin’ Confessional

In confessional, Leanne voiced her reservations about Kenley’s ability in rap – “Kenley’s gonna make an outfit for me, she better not make it look like it’s from 1950!”

Floral Hip Hop

Tim expressed early doubts about Kenley’s selection of a blue-ish floral print fabric for her hip-hop outfit, but she assured him that after all is said and done, “you’ll get it.”

Kenley Spears and Shania Jank

Jerell told Kenley that he was going to make her into “Kenley Spears” a pop star modeled after Britney. He vowed to “bring out the sex goddess in [Kenley].” Meanwhile, Korto was getting herself into the right frame of mind for her country attire debut by dubbing herself “Shania Jank” with the “Jank [being a] code word for jacked up.”

Not Buying Her a Clue

Apparently Kenley’s behavior hasn’t won her any friends among the other designers and they were quite amused by her attempt at crafting a hip-hop outfit. Korto noted that Kenley’s design wasn’t hip-hop at all, but “we’re not going to say anything [to her].”

Kicking it Up a Notch, Tim Gunn Style

Tim’s main concern with all the designs, except Kenley’s, seemed to be making sure the designers ramped up their designs more. He told Korto that her design was “very basic” and that it could use “extra effect.” He asked Leanne if perhaps her design was “too subtle, too nuanced?” He advised Suede to kick up his design a notch, noting that “every single, solitary detail matters.” As for Jerell, he cautioned Jerell on making sure that when he added more to his design, “it’s the right kind of more.”

Sacrilege!

As usual, Kenley was the only designer to not seriously consider Tim’s well-meaning advice. In fact, she was downright rude and obnoxious to him, when he suggested that an element of a hip-hop outfit be “oversized.” Her attitude and behavior caused Tim to sternly advice her that she would benefit from listening, and that he was only trying to help her. He told her to “remove the sarcasm and facetiousness.” We’re still stunned that Kenley would behave that way, especially to Tim Gunn. As Korto put it, Tim “needs to be respected.” That’s like a cardinal rule on this show.
