Episode Air Date: August 6, 2008
Life Goes On
Korto, the 33 year old Liberia native, seemed sad that her roommate, Emily, was no longer there, but about 1.5 seconds later, she remarked that this was a competition and someone’s got to go, and in the end, life (and the competition) goes on.
No Changes
As the winning designer, Kenley had the option to switch models, but she opted to remain with her current model, which meant that again, there was no models swap.
Wild Guesses
During the van ride to their field trip destination, the designers had some pretty wild ideas about what kind of challenge awaited them. Terri, the 39 year old from Illinois, said she hoped it was a hip-hop challenge, which actually sounds pretty cool. Kelli, the 27 year old from Ohio, got nervous when they passed a hospital remarking that she didn’t want to design nurses uniforms or scrubs. However, she could design “a good straitjacket.”
Field Trip to a Field House
Tim took the designers to a track and field house located on Fort Washington Avenue, where they met this week’s guest judge – Olympian speed skater, Apolo Anton Ohno.
The United States’s Image to the World
This week’s challenge required the designers to construct a look that female athletes could wear to the opening ceremonies of an Olympic summer games. Their look should represent the image of American athletes to the world. They were given $150 and one day (12 hours) in which to complete their designs.
Aerodynamic Gladiator?
While shopping for fabrics, Stella opted for a black stretch fabric which gave Tim pause. He noted that it was not “bad, [but it was] inquiring.” Stella noted that she was going for a “bold, progressive, [and] aerodynamic” look because she likened Olympians to gladiators.
Worry About the Plaid
Korto remarked that the other designers questioned her choice of a white leather fabric, but she was confident in her choices. She noted that the others shouldn’t “worry about [her] leather. [Instead, they should] worry about the plaid [they] just picked out.”
That’s My Fabric!
Terri and Keith (26 year old from Utah) almost clashed when Keith took from the roll of fabric that Terri had chosen. Terri commented on Keith’s competitive nature, noting that “a sister’s gotta keep an eye out.”
Is That An Olympic Sport?
Blayne, the very tan 23 year old from Washington, noted that “in tanning, [he’s] an Olympian.” The other designers joked that he would win the “tan bronze medal.” Blayne then lamented that he hasn’t had the chance to tan since the competition started and by the end of it, he would be “frail white.” We don’t think he’ll ever be that pale, but maybe with less tanning, he’ll be less Oompa-Loompa orange.
