Daniel Cut From Project Runway

From Katie Lee

Aug 24 2008
Airdate: Wednesday, August 20, 2008

Trash Talking in the Mornin’

While they were prepping for another day, some of the designers indulged in a bit of trash talk. Korto commented that she couldn’t believe that Kelli was cut instead of Daniel last week since Daniel’s designs tended to play things safe. Meanwhile, Joe expressed his surprise that Keith won the last challenge given that Keith just did what he always does – makes swatches and fringe, which Joe didn’t find impressive.

What a Drag

Season 4 finalist Chris March returned – in full drag queen costume, complete with blond Viking headdress and giant disco balls breastplates. Chris revealed that the designers’ next challenge would be to create an outfit for a drag queen, and then he asked 11 drag queens to come out onto the runway.

Good Matches?

The designers were allowed to pick which drag queen they’d like to work with, starting with last week’s winner Keith and then by random pick by Heidi. Most of the designers seemed happy with their choices.

Theatrical for a Good Cause

The designers were told that they would have 30 minutes to consult with their clients, and that this was their chance to be over-the-top and theatrical in their designs. They were given $200 and 2 days in which to complete their designs. They were also told that the winning design would be auctioned off to benefit the charity Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids.

An Early Halloween

Joe said that he didn’t full comprehend all that was associated with the challenge but that his approach would be similar to “creating a Halloween costume for my daughter.” His daughter must have had some amazing Halloween costumes if that’s the case.

Snarklicious!

Blayne continued to annoy the other contestants with his tendency to add “licious” to the end of words. Leanne summed it up best when she snarked, “If I hear that word one more time, I’m gonna barf. That would be barflicious I guess.”

Grandpa Told Me To!

Suede, who has thankfully stopped talking in the third person, said that while creating his design, he began to daydream and his late grandfather appeared to him, telling him the dress needed “seeds” which Suede translated into making little green “lettuce bulbs” that he then sewed onto the edge of elbow length green gloves. If you’re wondering about the vegetation theme, Suede’s drag queen was Hedda Lettuce, and yes, she apparently liked the green/lettuce/vegetation look. Think Uma Thurman’s Poison Ivy character in the Batman movies – only greener.

A Drag Queen Sans Make-up. . .

. . .is a normal looking man, as many of the designers discovered at the first fitting when their clients showed up, out of costume and make-up. It was funny to see some of their reactions, as well as what the drag queens really looked like underneath it all.

An Early Frost

Tensions ran high between Suede and his client, Hedda Lettuce, at the first fitting when Hedda expressed dismay at the outfit’s lack of sleeves. Hedda sniped at Suede, “Are you too lazy to make sleeves?” Suede, of course, didn’t take too kindly to Hedda’s comments and designer/client relations went into deep freeze thereafter. Suede later called Hedda a “soggy lettuce.”

That’s a Compliment?

Chris joined Tim in his early assessments and when Tim/Chris saw Blayne’s neon pink and blue outfit complete with fringed wings, Tim remarked, “It looks like a pterodactyl from gay Jurassic Park.” Blayne took that as “the best compliment” since it meant he hadn’t created a boring outfit which to him, would be the worst thing ever.

On a Roll

Tim was on a roll this week with the one-liners and zingers. When Suede confessed to him that his client had called him lazy for making the gloves, Tim suggested that Suede have his client wear the gloves regardless and if Hedda questions it, Suede should say, “[I’ve] been to a different rodeo and don’t you-know-what with me.”

Not Getting It

Daniel’s orange/yellow flamenco style dress was deemed to have a “plain top” by Tim. Daniel noted that he didn’t really take Tim’s comments to heart because he knows what’s good and what’s not and comments by others “doesn’t bother [him.]” Oh Daniel, haven’t you learned that ignoring Tim Gunn can be detrimental?

Letting it Go Things were still tense between Suede and Hedda on the day of the runway show, but after a sewing room confrontation/confession, they both agreed to let things go and then kissed and made up.
