Just a Mess!
The bottom three designs were by Suede, Stella and Joe. Suede’s stripe-printed dress with a herringbone vest was thought to be “not flattering” on his model. They noted that his model had a tiny waist and he put “too much fabric at the hip.” They also questioned him pairing the dress with the vest since the two pieces didn’t fit. As Michael Kors put it, seeing the two pieces together makes people wonder, “did she get dressed in the dark?” Stella’s pants, vest and cape ensemble was a good idea but “the execution didn’t work.” For one thing, the cape looked more like “a magician’s cape” as opposed to a fashionable, stylish cape. For another thing, her tailoring was off. Michael Kors noted that the crotch on her pants was “every woman’s worse nightmare.” As Fern summed it up, “Stella was not stellar.” Finally, Joe’s black skirt, bubblegum pink backless blouse and hooded shawl were ill-fitting from behind. From the front, the outfit looked fine but once the model turned around, there were problems. The judges didn’t like the backless blouse, finding it “a little odd.” They also didn’t appreciate that his skirt was crooked, with one hem higher than the other. As Diane noted, the view from the back made the outfit “look homemade” and Heidi said it was “messy, messy, messy.”
Twofer!
Leanne was declared the winner for the second challenge in a row. For winning this challenge, her design would be produced by American Express and sold to its cardholders, with proceeds going to the charity, CDFA.
This Isn’t a Sad Thing Necessarily
It came down to Joe and Stella. While the judges said Joe’s design left them “confused” and “had too much going on,” they eliminated Stella because she “gave them three pieces, and none were well done” and overall, her design was a “major misstep.” Stella didn’t seem phased by her elimination. In fact, she looked bored on the runway and when Tim asked her to clean up her workspace, she took in all in stride. So much so that Tim declared, “well, that was an ebullient departure!”
