Amazing Race Ride-Along

The Casting Video

From Guest Contributor Bonnie Covel, for About.com

Feb 6 2006
So far, we’ve met Jerome McIlvain and Hilary Avalon and learned why they want to be on The Amazing Race 10. We’ve learned of their application form process and read some of the questions and their answers. Now it’s time for the casting video.

In order to be considered for The Amazing Race, applicants must submit a video that follows the following criteria:

  • Maximum of three minutes in length
  • Teammates need to appear together on camera
  • The video must be in VHS format
  • The video should include all the reasons teammates would be perfect for The Amazing Race.

The challenge for Hilary and Jerome is to let their personalities shine and show the judges that they would be perfect for The Amazing Race. The tape should be entertaining, but without over-the-top gimmicks.

Hilary and Jerome decided to show themselves completing three “challenges” for their casting video – Balance, Booze, and B.S.ing. “We had fun while doing it,” Hilary says. “It was silly fun, and Jerome and I both really enjoy that type of thing.”

Jerome says they came up with their video theme by brainstorming. “We thought a dip in the hot tub would be a nice bonus, so we tried to incorporate that into the theme.”

“That was the longest period of time I had been in my hot tub in, like, five years!” Hilary says.

Hilary’s friend, Jean Bullard, did the filming and says, “From the start, Jerome was very direct about what he wanted to do. He wanted to talk it out first, practice a few times and then tape. Hilary was a bit more relaxed about it. After watching and listening to them talk about the tape, it became very obvious that the process alone was hysterical. They each have such dynamic personalities and then when you put them together - wow!”

Jean decided to film while Hilary and Jerome talked about what they would do for the video. She figured she had a better chance of catching the best moments without them practicing anything. “I lost count of the times that Jerome told me to cut, stop taping, enough – no,” she says. “I just filmed everything!”

Hilary and Jerome are glad that Jean did not take direction well. “If she had ‘cut’ every time Jerome told her to ‘cut’ we wouldn’t have gotten half of the hilarious stuff we did.”

I produced their video and I thought it was so much fun. It shows their personalities and I hope it stands out to the judges. They had so much great stuff taped that it was hard to decide what to put into the video.

What’s next for our Amazing Race hopefuls? It’s time to sit and wait and keep your fingers, toes, and eyes crossed. If Jerome and Hilary move on to the next stage, which is the interview process, they will hear from the producers by the beginning of March.

I asked Hilary what she thought their chances of moving on are and she said, “At this point, I still feel less than optimistic about my chances of going on to the next phase. I don’t feel like a ‘Reality TV’ kind of gal. If we make it to the next phase or on the show, I think it will be because of Jerome. Of course, if we WIN, it will be because of me. ;O)

Amazing Ride-Along Question of the Week:

On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best and 1 being the worst, do Hilary and Jerome have a good shot at making it to the next stage, the interview process?
