Reality TV's British Invasion

By Latoya West, About.com

You may have noticed that some of Reality TV's biggest stars have British accents these days -- and viewers wouldn't want it any other way. Reality TV wouldn't be the same without our favorite visa-holders from across the pond. From the Supernanny to Simon Cowell, here are the leaders of Reality TV's British Invasion.

1. Gordon Ramsay

Gordon Ramsay's British accent doesn't make him sound any more charming when he tells a Hell's Kitchen contestant to f--- off. America's favorite foul-mouthed chef was raised in England's Stratford-Upon-Avon and started his culinary career in London.

2. Jo Frost

We wonder if Jo Frost was ever put in the "naughty corner" when she was a young girl growing up in London, England. TV's supernanny became the authority on raising well-behaved boys and girls while working as a nanny for families in England.

3. Piers Morgan

Piers Morgan is the British judge known for making little children cry on America's Got Talent. But back in London, he kept the little ones informed with First News, a newspaper for children that he founded. Piers is also a respected journalist and TV personality in England.

4. Len Goodman

Former dancer Len Goodman goes back to his home in Kent, England when he is not at the judge's table on ABC's Dancing With the Stars. Len's impressive dance career in the UK led to his gig as head judge on Strictly Come Dancing, the original UK version of Dancing With the Stars.

5. Simon Cowell

American Idol judge Simon Cowell is a pro when it comes to insulting pitiful pop star wannabes -- he got plenty of experience when he was a judge on the UK's Pop Idol. Brighton, England-born Simon won over his country before making his move on America. And now that the super-successful star has multiple projects on two continents, fans are getting used to sharing him.

6. Nigel Lythgoe

Former British choreographer Nigel Lythgoe was known as Nasty Nigel when he judged the British reality show Popstars. If you've seen him criticize bad dancers on So You Think You Can Dance, you can probably guess why he earned that nickname. But Nigel's mark on American reality TV goes beyond his brutally honest comments on So You Think You Can Dance. He is also the executive producer of a little reality competition called American Idol. Nasty Nigel's accomplishments as a producer and choreographer back in England are even more impressive.

7. Twiggy

Back in the sixties, Twiggy Lawson became one of Britain's first top models. Now the fashion icon is trying to find a few top models across the pond on America's Next Top Model. Who would have thought this calm and proper British lady could fill the Top Model judge seat once occupied by the wild and crazy Janice Dickinson?

8. Cat Deeley

When we think of Cat Deeley, we think of the cute dresses she wears every week as host of So You Think You Can Dance. Ask a British TV viewer about Cat, and they may tell you that she is an award-winning TV presenter in the UK, who has has interviewed everyone from Madonna to U2! Cat's first American hosting gig on Dance is just another bullet on the British starlet's impressive resume.
