So You Think You Can Dance Recap - Season 4, Performance Show 2

From Katie Lee

Not Well Matched

Jessica and Will are given a Hip-hop routine choreographed by Cecily and Denise. Will said that he liked the "internal battle" that Jessica tended to fight, while Jessica said she liked Will's focus and professionalism, although this can be a negative as well since he does have a tendency to be too serious. They were in the bottom 3 last week which they found to be "very, very challenging." Dancing to Nicole Scherziner's "Whatever You Like," their routine looked uneven. Jessica danced very loose, which wasn't good for a hip-hop routine as her movements should have more "snap." Will was stronger, and it showed, especially when they were dancing in unison. Mia seemed to agree with us, finding Jessica's dancing to be "cheerleader-like" and that she needed to "step it up. A lot. A lot. A lot." She, however, loved Will. Mary agreed with Mia, finding Jessica's dancing to be "powder puffy." Nigel didn't quite agree, as he thought Jessica did a "great job." He did join in Mary's and Mia's praise of Will. Seemed to us that the judges want Will to be with a "stronger" partner, which makes us think that if Jessica and Will land in the bottom 3 Thursday night, Jessica may well be toast.

Hot to Trot

The tallest couple in the competition, Kourtni and Matt, get a Foxtrot choreographed by Jean-Marc. Matt likes Kourtni's eyes, saying he could get lost in them. Kourtni, on the other hand, isn't wild about Matt's singing, but Matt countered that she just doesn't have an ear for good music. Dancing to Michael Buble's "A Foggy Day," they looked lovely. Their height really worked for them in the dance, letting them really extend their lines, which is important in a dance like the Foxtrot. They also looked like they were floating across the stage during certain points of the routine. Mia found their dance to be "great, old Hollywood elegance," and that it was "gorgeous." She did say that while Matt looked "refined and elegant," Kourtni "lacked." Mary was "slightly disappointed" with the performance, and thought the "footwork was off." Nigel "thoroughly enjoyed it" and thought it was "very, very strong." However, the performance did feel "fake' in some places to him.

Crushed Out

Gev and Courtney are given a contemporary piece choreographed by Mandy Moore. Courtney revealed that Gev is really strong and a good guy. Gev seemed to be harboring a crush on Courtney, noting that she is a "cutie" and "really pretty" but that it "sucks [that] she has a boyfriend." Their dance was fairly nice, but not a standout. We will agree with Courtney that Gev is very strong because he was lifting Courtney around that stage like she weighed nothing at all. Mia gave Mandy Moore props on the choreography, but thought Courtney could have more "organic purity" in her performance. She thought Courtney "jazzified" the dance. On the other hand, she was "so proud" of Gev. Mary "loved it" and thought it was "so cool." She said Gev was a "breaker who was going to break some hearts." Nigel thought the dance was good, and that they were a "beautifully well balanced couple" but that it wasn't an "emotional" enough dance for him, telling Gev that he seemed to have more feelings for Courtney off the stage than on it.

Two for Two

Katee and Joshua danced a Broadway routine choreographed by Tyce. Katee revealed that she liked that Joshua is such a caring partner, although she doesn't like how he mimics her. Joshua said he liked Katee's smile, but not her tendency to do silly dances at odd times. Dancing to "All For the Best" from Godspell, their dance routine is high energy and fun. Given last week's standout performance, they may be the strongest couple in the competition thus far. They get a standing ovation from the judges, and even got Nigel to do a little jig. Nigel said that it was "entertainment" and that it was "fantastic [and] incredible." He also thought Katee had a "beautiful spirit." Mary said that "[they] should come with a warranty - satisfaction guaranteed!" She loved every second of it. Mia couldn't add more to what Mary and Nigel said except that she thought the "connection [between Katee and Joshua was] unreal."
