'So You Think You Can Dance' Recap - Season 4, Performance Show 3

From Katie Lee

Not Feeling Jazzed

Comfort and Chris are assigned a Jazz routine choreographed by Tyce. Comfort said that Chris liked to "mooch" other people's food. Chris revealed that Comfort once competed in a child beauty pageant. They danced to "Beautiful People" by Marilyn Manson and their routine was nice, if a bit boring, with a lot of rolling around on brown sheets (symbolizing mud) on the stage. Nigel noted that he wanted "more power" to the routine, which was "a little soft" as they were supposed to be African warriors. He said it should have been "more animalistic." Mary said it "fell short" and that she "became disinterested" in their routine after a while. Adam, still being long-winded, said that they needed to "listen [and] feel the music" and that he needed to "see the aggression in their faces [as well as their bodies]."

Flawed Disco

Jessica and Will danced a Disco routine choreographed by Doriana. Jessica revealed that Will is a perfect gentleman, while Will noted that Jessica's nickname is Ariel, after the title character in "The Little Mermaid" since she used to have long, red hair down to her butt. They danced to Bonnie Pointer's "Heaven Must Have Sent You" and they noted that given the verbal drubbing Jessica received last week, they were hoping the dance would allow her to showcase her talents. We're not sure they did it as the dance had some mistakes, including a shaky last lift/hold. Nigel thought they "danced it very, very well" but that "things went wrong." Mary said that while there were mistakes, there were also "a lot of great things" in their routine as well, and that they were "lean, mean, disco machines." She said it was a "turning point" for them, as Jessica finally hit her mark. Adam thought it was "fantastic" and that Will was "scary [because he's] so good." Adam noted that Jessica was beautiful and talented and told her "not to get in your own way."

Contemporary Quirks

Matt and Kourtni are given a dance in their own style, Contemporary, choreographed by one of this season's new choreographers, Sonya. Matt revealed that Kourtni has a tattoo on the back of her neck, while Kourtni revealed that Matt likes to wear a purple, striped, ninja mask sometimes. Sadly, we didn't make that up. They danced to "Wrestlers" by Hot Chip, and it was a strange routine, with them dressed as hobos engaged in a kind of love/hate relationship. Their technique was strong and it was an engaging performance. Nigel praised the "quirky" choreography and how it brings a "new flavor" to the show. He noted it was a "great" routine but that he still wanted Matt to "relax more" as he was still dancing "a bit stiff." Mary said "something weird was for sale and I'm buying it." Adam thought their "control was beautiful" and that their bodies "talk when they dance." He agreed with Nigel that Matt needed to "let go more [and] dance into the floor."

Kicked Off The Train

Thayne and Chelsea got the Quickstep, choreographed by another new choreographer, Heather. Thayne revealed that Chelsea is a "flower thief" who likes to pick flowers and/or make off with flower arrangements found on tables and the like. Chelsea revealed that Thayne wanted to be a fashion designer and he's very creative with clothes. They danced to Phil Collins' "You Can't Hurry Love" and their routine didn't seem to have that fast-paced crispness that a quickstep should have. Nigel said it was "too bouncy" in parts and that while it was a "better attempt than [he thought it would be]" he thinks they "better get their solos ready." Mary thought it was just "okay" and that it fell short. She also said she had to kick them off the hot tamale train. Adam thought they "didn't look comfortable" and that as dancers, they needed to "make it work" which they didn't quite do.

Lyrical Hip-Hop

Chelsie and Mark danced the second Hip-hop routine choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon tonight. Chelsie revealed that Mark has "weird" crooked teeth, and Mark revealed that Chelsie is quite the tomboy off the dance floor. They danced to Leona Lewis's "Bleeding Love" and it told the story of a woman trying to hold onto a man who was torn between her and his job. Their performance was emotionally engaging and interesting although there were some slight synchronicity problems. Nigel thought it was "absolutely brilliantly choreographed and danced." Mary loved it and that she totally "believed the emotional struggle" of the dance. Adam thought it was "awesome" and that they really "put life" into the steps given them by Tabitha and Napoleon. He deemed them "the couple to beat."

Daddy's Buns

Katee and Joshua closed out the night with a Samba choreographed by Tony and Melanie. Katee revealed that Joshua might seem like a tough guy driving fast cars and riding motorcycles but that he was really a softie and a teddy bear. Joshua revealed that Katee "screamed like a boy." They danced to Angela Via's "Baila, Baila" and their routine seemed to start off stiffly but smoothed out into a sexy, fun samba at the end. Nigel asked Joshua what he thought when he found out he would have to dance the samba and Joshua replied honestly, "Time to do a solo." Nigel laughed and said it probably won't be necessary, finding the performance "wonderful." He also said Joshua had a great butt and asked him if he got his buns from his father (who was in the audience). Nigel then had Papa Joshua show off his butt to us as well. A little awk-ward. Mary said she was giving them "two first class tickets" to her hot tamale train. Adam thought it was "great" and that it was "some serious competing" He also noted that Katee was "smokin' hot."
