The Amazing Race: All-Stars Recap - - Teams Compete in Mozambique

What happened on the fifth episode of The Amazing Race: All-Stars?

From Katie Lee, for About.com

Mar 19 2007

A Cold Start

Teams were told to go to Marshall Glacier, where they must use an avalanche beacon to find their clue buried in the snow. Danny/Ozzie had trouble with their beacon but eventually did manage to find their clue without falling behind too much.

Friendly Alliance

There was an informal alliance between Teri/Ian and Danny/Ozzie, which seemed to benefit both teams at the airport. When Danny/Ozzie caught up, Teri/Ian let them use their travel agent, and Danny's Spanish-language skills proved helpful there, as there was no language barrier, and both teams got their tickets quickly, compared to the others. Although in the end, everyone was on the same flight headed to. . .

Mozambique

Maputo, to be exact.

'Travel Shower'

Joe/Bill spent their time before the flight hitting the fragrance store in the airport, taking a quick 'shower' in sample fragrances.

This Isn't Grey's Anatomy

Eric/Danielle decide to 'play' with Joe/Bill en route to the Roadblock, which didn't sit well with Joe/Bill, ending up in an argument where words like 'freaks' and 'weirdos' were thrown out. In fact, Eric called Joe/Bill something else that we won't repeat here only because we don't want to give credence to homophobic slurs. We think Eric could benefit from the same 'rehab' that Isaiah Washington is reportedly going through.

You Can Train a Rat

The Roadblock required a racer to use rats (which were huge, about the size of a small Chihuahua) that were trained to find land mines to find a deactivated land mine in a designated area. Charla's rat didn't seem cooperative and she and Mirna fall behind when they fail to locate their land mine quickly enough.

When in Doubt. . .

. . .go with the manicure. The Detour gave teams the option to either give people in Maputo manicures and make the equivalent of about 1 U.S. dollar, or to fill 10 45-lbs bags with coals, by hand, and then deliver one of the bags. Frankly, this is the kind of choice we'd term a 'no-brainer.'

And Yet. . .

Only 3 teams chose the easy manicure task - Charla/Mirna, Teri/Ian and Dustin/Kandice.

No Surprise

When the most difficult aspect of your task is to convince people to let you paint their nails and have them pay you enough to earn one U.S. dollar, once you've managed to actually convince a few daring souls, you can complete the task quickly and easily. It is then, no surprise, that Charla/Mirna, Dustin/Kandice, and Teri/Ian finished 1, 2 and 3 in this leg of the race.

First, and Another First

Charla/Mirna finished first this leg of the race, making it their first time ever to finish first on a leg. For their 'historic' finish, they win a trip for 2 to the Grand Aruba Resort.

Meanwhile. . .

The other teams are laboring, hard, in the coal fields. Not only must they fill 10 45-lbs bags with coals, they must sew those bags up, and then carry one of those bags through the streets of Maputo to deliver it to a specific address. So, back-breaking labor combined with tricky navigation. Did we mention these tasks are 'no-brainers' as in, you have no brains if you do them?

It All Comes Down to Navigation

The teams doing the coal tasks had trouble not only finding the designated delivery place, but also finding the pit stop. Joyce/Uchenna struggled the most in finding the delivery address, and as a result, checked in last at the pit stop.

But As Luck Would Have It

It was a non-elimination leg. The same rules from last season applied, namely that Joyce/Uchenna are now 'marked for elimination' and must check in first at the next pit stop or incur a time penalty.

Funniest Moment

If you have this episode on tape, DVR or Tivo, we recommend rewinding to watch Danny/Ozzie checking in at the pit stop where they are both filthy from the coal task and Ozzie decides to chase Phil around for a congratulatory hug. It's one of the funniest moments we've seen on this show.
