The Amazing Race: All-Stars Recap -- Teams Compete in Hong Kong

What happened on the ninth episode of The Amazing Race: All-Stars?

Destination:

Hong Kong.

There's Something Eerily Familiar About All of This

Once again, teams jockey for position on flights that only have standby seats, and once again, it's a headache-inducing ordeal. Danny/Ozzie lucked out by going to the back offices of the two main airlines flying from Kuala Lumpur to Hong Kong - Malaysian Air and China Air and managed to get waitlisted first on the China Air flight (first one out). They continued their 'joint venture' with Charla/Mirna by trying to help them get 'bumped up' on the list - even giving them their code for the standby on Malaysian Air.

'Yield Karma'

Charla/Mirna claimed that they've coined a new phrase - 'yield karma' to describe what would happen to people who resort to 'dirty play' by using things that are PERFECTLY WITHIN THE RULES AND PART OF THE GAME - like the Yield. Seriously. What is with all the dramatics and hand-wringing when teams try to get an edge in a RACE to win a million dollars? It's not like Dustin/Kandice whacked Eric/Danielle in the knees and left them on the streets of Kuala Lumpur.

Just to Prove Our Point

Either 'yield karma' was taking a break, or it's not working the way it's supposed to because after much jockeying and the usual 'we were here first, don't talk to them!' antics, Dustin/Kandice and Charla/Mirna both managed to get relatively early flights to Hong Kong, while Eric/Danielle are left to take a flight that puts them way behind.

Fun Task #1

This leg of the race was full of fun tasks - including the last Fast Forward of the race. Danny/Ozzie, the first team to arrive in Kuala Lumpur, go after the Fast Forward which required them to get strapped into a stunt car and then do a high speed jump roll (when a car jumps off a ramp and then rolls on its side). It looked like a lot of fun and Danny/Ozzie had a blast doing it.

Fun Task #2

The Detour presented yet another 'needle in a haystack' task called 'Lost in Translation' (requiring teams to find a specific sign full of Chinese symbols among dozens of similar-looking signs) versus one called 'Kung Fu Fighting' which required teams to scale an 11-foot scaffolding while avoiding 'flying kung fu fighters' (think of that scene in 'Rush Hour 2') Most teams went with the fun, kung fu fighting task, and completed it with relative ease and speed.

Fun Task #3

The Roadblock required a racer to kick down a bunch of stunt doors (rigged to fall down or open with a good kick) to locate the clue hidden behind one of those doors. The task looked like a lot of fun and seemed like a great stress reliever, too. Who hasn't wanted to kick a door in now and then?

No Money, But. . .

. . .they still managed to come in first. Danny/Ozzie, struggling with money (because Danny used up all their 'leftover' money in the Roadblock on the last task) as well as some navigational issues, came in first - thanks to the Fast Forward. They won a trip back to Hong Kong during the Chinese New Year (which was in February).

Wrong Way

Charla/Mirna fell behind when they took the wrong ferry to their next clue, which allowed Eric/Danielle to catch up a bit.

Blatant Product Placement

If you didn't know by now that Travelocity was one of the main sponsors of this show, you would after watching this episode, where Travelocity's mascot, the gnome, was featured prominently in one of the tasks, and teams were actually required to carry the gnome to the pit stop with them.

No Karma, but Luck Saves the Day

Eric/Danielle tried their level best but were never able to make up for the flight problem and came in last. However, it was a non-elimination leg. So they lived to race another day - 'marked for elimination' of course.
