He's Probably Heard This Before
Married couple, David/Mary, continue to entertain with their own brand of Honeymooners-style interaction. When Mary mentions, yet again, that her ankle hurts (she sprained it during the 2nd leg of the race), David responds a dry, unsympathetic 'Yeah, yeah.'
Listening Is Fundamental
One of the clues for this leg of the race is an audio clue. Many teams opt to pull their Vietnamese cab drivers to the clue and have those cab drivers listen for the destination. Not surprisingly, dating couple, Rob/Kimberly, who have trouble listening to each other, have the hardest time with this task. Instead of trying to listen to the clue themselves, they first decide to follow models, Tyler/James, and then when they lose them in traffic, go back and make their cab driver listen. When the cab driver seems lost, they find another cab driver and make him listen. Somehow, they managed to find the right destination.
Up A Cliff
The Roadblock requires a team member to ascend a cliff by pulling themselves up with what looks like a rope pulley system. Almost all the teams have trouble with this physically grueling task.
That's Your Idea of Motivation?
Peter, who likes to 'motivate' his partner, Sarah, by constantly shouting phrases like 'find your power Sarah!' but has no qualms about leaving her behind on a rocking boat or crawling through a muddy rice paddy, at one points shouts to her, as she struggles to climb up the cliff, and is being passed by Tyler, to 'spit on him [Tyler] or something.' Sarah, in what must be the understatement of this episode, declares that she's learning things about Peter's character that is 'disappointing.'
Over or Under
The Detour requires teams to either 'harvest' pearl baskets or to pick up and deliver goods to pre-determined addresses around a floating village. The pearl harvesting task is more physical, but can be done quickly, whereas the delivery task can take a while if teams can't locate the right address. However, because both tasks require teams to row a traditional Vietnamese boat, known as a sampan, both tasks prove to be daunting this time around.
Row, Row, Row Your Boat. . .
. . .around and around. All the teams struggle to control their boats in the wind-heavy waters. Most teams spend a significant amount of time rowing their boats in the wrong direction, straight toward the looming cliffs, or futilely around and around, as they try to locate their Detour tasks, or to complete those tasks.
Sometimes, Not-So-Nice Guys Finish First
Bickering couple, Rob/Kimberly, who yelled and argued their way through this leg of the race, like they did the previous legs of the race, managed to come in first, and win themselves jet skis.
Moment That Made Us Laugh
Mary's description of host, Phil Keoghan, as a 'scrawny, gorgeous thing.'
Unless You Have A Photographic Memory. . .
. . . take care of your clues! Beauty queens, Dustin/Kandice, flirt with elimination when they fail to take care of their clues on this leg of the race, particularly the crucial last clue that tells them where and how to reach the pit stop. When they can't remember exactly what the clue had said, and they realize that they had let the clue get wet and shredded, they waste valuable time trying to find the pit stop on their own before they finally figured it out. They reached the pit stop seventh, just shy of elimination.
Out Of Here
Tom, frustrated by the fact that they weren't getting anywhere rowing the boat, finally jumped in the water and pulled the boat along like a human tugboat. However, his gutsy move was for naught as he and his partner, Terry, check in last and are eliminated. We're pretty sure that when he said he 'had to get out of there,' he didn't quite mean it that way.
